Can anyone recommend another roguelike to try next? Having gone from Returnal to Hades, never having dipped a toe into the genre before this summer, I kinda don't want to play anything else right now! You'll probably hear a few recommendations for platformers so let me add a few from other perspectives because I suck at platformers Void Bastards- FPS roguelike, really unique quirky style and great combat. Moonlighter- Top down melee combat, good weapons, nice progression based on selling the items you find in your shop back home

Having gone from Returnal to Hades, never having dipped a toe into the genre before this summer, I kinda don't want to play anything else right now! If you go into other roguelikes expecting them to be as good as Hades, you're going to be disappointed. That said, you might also want to check out Crypt of the Necrodancer, Dead Cells, Enter the Gungeon, or Atomicrops, all of which are broadly cast into the same mold. Necrodancer less so than the others, but it's the only roguelike I have nothing bad to say about, it's such an immaculate masterpiece. Story-rich roguelikes are comparatively rare. There's writing-heavy roguelikes like Sunless Sea and Cultist Simulator, but the structure of try-die-repeat is hard to fit into a traditional narrative, making it all the more impressive that Hades does this with such grace and style. I would honestly recommend the other Supergiant games, Pyre, Transistor and Bastion, over other roguelikes if another game like Hades is what you're after.

Thanks very much for the response - very good of you. If you go into other roguelikes expecting them to be as good as Hades, you're going to be disappointed.
Yeah, I can see that. Hades seems to be considered best in class for all the things it does which most roguelikes don't, so searching for a like-for-like game is probably an exercise in futility.
With that in mind, I'd like something with similar combat (fast-paced and satisfying, be it ranged or melee); comparable progression (so even failed runs feel worthwhile, as long as you managed to unlock something decent); runs that last a similar amount of time (45-60 minutes at first, then dropping to 25-30 as your skills and gear improve); and an arresting art style (even if it's very different to that of Hades).
Thanks again.

While I've enjoyed playing about with this on my ageing iMac (thanks to addyb!) for 15-20 minutes at a time, I don't see myself putting hours and hours into it as I did with Returnal/am with Hades. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Combat: Dead Cells is a clear winner here. EtG and Atomicrops are both twin stick shooters, quality ones, but they feel very different from getting up close and personal. Necrodancer has a variety of weapons, both melee and ranged, but well, it's turn-based on a grid and you move on the beat of the music, which is a whole other beast. Progression: Dead Cells, again, does unlocks and progression quite well. You might not unlock something new every run, but you're always building towards more powerful stuff. Atomicrops is comparatively very stingy with unlocks, you have to actually unlock the merchants that sell you upgrades and that can take a while, and they're pretty incremental upgrades at that. EtG I can't remember. Runtime I honestly can't remember for most of them, but none of them exceed an hour. Death starts to feel a lot more punishing when you've invested more than an hour into a single run, so not many roguelikes have the guts to trap you for longer than that. Art style you'll just have to see for yourself. There is also Curse of the Dead Gods, which is the most similar thing out there combat-wise to Hades, and has some pretty cool stuff to unlock too. It struck me as a well-designed game overall, but there's a soullessness that kinda turned me off it. If Hades combat scratched an itch that nothing else does, though, you might like it.

Another vote for Dead Cells. Combat is really tight.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is the closest to Hades in roguelike perfection.
If you're looking for roguelikes with a faster progression arc then Risk of Rain or Rogue Legacy are games that will utterly suck you in, but allow you to see the end before you forget the names of your family.

Yeah, as others have said, your flavour of roguelite after Hades will depend on what you liked about Hades.
Combat: probably Dead Cells
Variety: Isaac, Slay the Spire
Story: Sunless Sea, I guess?
Personally, my favourites in the "run-based game" genre (which to me makes more sense than calling them roguelikes or roguelites) are turn-based strategy. So, Into The Breach, or Invisible Inc.
But they're not at all like Hades, and that could be said about pretty much all the recommendations you're getting here. It's a very, veeeery broad genre, if you could even call it a genre at all.

I had Dead Cells but it never quite grabbed me in the same way - nothing wrong with the game at all it was silky smooth and I liked the art style and the combat. It just didn't click at the time. Honestly I can see Hades being my goto for the foreseeable future as I don't think any similar games are scratching the itch as effectively.
The only 'roguelite' I've put as much time into is Slay the Spire but they're not really comparable for obvious reasons. Love it though!
I've still not got round to Enter the Gungeon I should give it a go as I think I have it as a PS+ game.

Is there a way to see how many runs/attempts I have made? Reading through people's posts here is making me feel inadequate.. Feels like I've made 20+ runs and I only made it to the Asphodel boss for the first time last night. Admittedly I beat it first go (seemed quite simple..) and got a few encounters through Elysium.
I've unlocked all 6 weapons, not sure where to focus my titan blood. Didn't like the rail. Sword and bow probably favourite with spear and fists in second rank.
My underlying plan is to get enough darkness for the second level of death defiance. Currently in the high 300s/500

Two ways (maybe more). You can buy the bowl of scrying (?) from the contractor which appears in your bedroom. That gives you a tally of runs and enemies killed.
And, eventually, you can buy access to the locked room next to achilles which gives you a far more granular stat breakdown of escapes, victories and heat levels per weapon and all that stuff.

Started this for the first time (finally!). It’s a bit confusing but I enjoyed it.
Just 3 runs so far - the first boss (Meg) killed me the first time, but I switched to the bow for my second run and beat her easily enough. I did get lucky with a heal right before the boss room though.
Back to the sword on the third and she destroyed me again… is it worth sticking the the play style I seem to do best at (ranged / bow) or do I need to cover all bases?
I love the music and dialogue. It absolutely transforms what could be a pretty frustrating and repetitive game (even with the upgrades carrying over) into something that’s genuinely enjoyable to play over again.

alastair regarding the "inadequacy"- I was having a similar wobble about a month ago, I'd only beaten it once or twice out of 50 attempts and it seemed I'd reached the limit of brute-forcing it by buying the mirror upgrades. I'm now on ~100 runs and winning something like one run in three, really enjoying all the endgame stuff that happens after you see credits for the first time. And that's on roughly the same mirror upgrades. It really does reward practice and getting to know the bosses moves and timings.

Thanks mate! I guess the boons are still random until I start using the keepsakes to guarantee a particular boon.
I know it will all come together with time and practice, I'm continually making progress, just some steps are smaller than others.

Opinions may vary, but I'd say there's no rush to beat the game by only using the weapon(s) you're best with. I tend to just pick whichever one has the bonus 20% darkness. That way you get decent with all of them, and you may find even the ones you hate have game-changing upgrades via the Daedalus hammer.

Complete agree, vary the weapons as the darkness benefit is valuable at that stage, plus they are all fun/viable in their own right.
Also I've never used the keepsakes to force a certain boon.
Admittedly I've done about 30 clears from about 100 runs which is poor compared to others but keep going and you'll love the natural progression you'll make.

I'm on seven clears out of fifty-odd attempts - five with the shield (!), and one apiece with the fists and the rail - and I'm hoping to hit 10, then see the closing credits, using the three other weapons. At that point, I'll probably call it quits for the time being, as the epilogue sounds like a bit of a grind; however, it's been one hell of an experience so far, and I've certainly got my money's worth (and then some). Can anyone recommend another roguelike to try next? Having gone from Returnal to Hades, never having dipped a toe into the genre before this summer, I kinda don't want to play anything else right now! I’m a major roguelike/lite addict across all genres, and I have two strong recommendations for you, both of which are similar isometric action titles: Dreamscaper - Very good combat, excellent presentation. There is a good story here, with some very nice characterisation, that unfortunately feels like it falls off during the later third of the game. Unlike Hades, the narrative does not effectively endure alongside the extended gameplay loop. Still, it’s a very strong 7.5/10 game for me. Curse of the Dead Gods - This has my full attention at the moment. It is fucking great, and will probably be one of my games of the year. However, it’s a straight up combat room game. There is no narrative, no characterisation, and only a splash of lore associated with the enemy types encountered. But, man…the presentation is superb, and the combat system is insanely good. In some ways, the combat is superior to that in Hades, though it adheres to a notably different methodical, strategic rhythm. They are very different games, despite surface similarities. It’s also a brutally difficult game, more difficult than Hades, so please bear that in mind. It’s a very strong 8.5/10 game for me, and I cannot recommend it enough. For possible consideration: Metallic Child - This is a recent release that I picked up, but I have only played the tutorial thus far. It seems very cool, with fast, crunchy robot smashing action. I’ll have more detailed impressions after I finish Curse of the Dead Gods.

You do get to uncover some interesting Skelly back story, though he is a bit of a wind up merchant.
It's worth getting up to at least 10 escapes.. I'm on 30 odd now but may not go too much further..

I made it to the final boss fight last night. And I think I even made it through part 1 of that without a use of Death Defied. Then it all came crashing down.
Frustrating, but at the same time each run feels like I'm making some progress with unlocking something.

Yeah it's masterful at giving you more things to do after the end. When I saw credits I only had one main thing I still wanted to do: reunite Orpheus and Eurydice but now my checklist is more like unlock all the hidden aspects, reunite Patroclus and Achilles, help Persephone sort out something with the Olympians, get all the keepsakes, reunite Nyx and Chaos It goes on and on...

The amount of work that must have gone into writing all that dialogue, accounting for all the different ways you can die. It's mind-blowing how much love has been put into the game.
