I think I cheesed the one at the end of a tunnel, the others were a combination of luck and dodge-rolling that I’d learned via the method of many, many deaths.

You cant kill the black knights early on without parry and riposte. Yeah, you can. Dodge, attack. I hardly ever parry in DS. Just never felt like it as dodge rolling with light armour is so effective

Yeah, I guess this works, too. Probably not for those in tight fucking corridors, but you can always lure them out.
Still, I think it's much easier to kill the first one right there when you encounter it by parrying his slow ass sword slash. Gives you enough time to quaff from the bottle when he's on the floor. Without parrying, I usually die there. Same for the one in asylum tutorial area.
Of course you can just skip them and come back later.

Black Knight Halberd dude kills himself (occasionally requires some shoe leather as encouragement)

Did not parry almost anything on my first playthrough, apart from the final boss and only managed to land a handful of parries on him, usually on his opening attacks... Still messing up my timing on parries on all From games :/

I have to admit that I'm not much of a backstabber past the initial sneak up from the back stab. Except Havel of course, backstab that fatso all day.

Exactly the same procedure with the black knights iirc. Probably not remembering properly but fairly sure

I've killed one of the Black Knights fairly easily by spamming fireballs at him and dodging his slow attacks. The second one just wrekt me in one swing though. Not helped by the fact the locations for fighting him are terrible. Spawns at the top of a bloody tower with narrow spiral staircase. Anyway, I'll figure him out.

No need to bother with him, but IIRC you can bait him to follow you down the stairs and fight him on open ground; just kill the other enemies around the tower first so you don't get ambushed!

Sounds like the one near the boar. Who is a huge bellend on that staircase
You've either got to circle backstab him at the top, and it's tight for space, or you're fucked really, because at the bottom of the stairs is a thin passageway with a boar at one end of it.
I'd try up top.

Suppose you could kill the boar and his mates first though and then bring twatface downstairs

Enjoying this so far, but gotta say the controls are annoying at times. Feels quite unresponsive at times compared to Elden Ring. The camera can be a devil too. It's surprisingly fond of narrow corridors and fights in such places are a real pain in the ass. Tens to just bait them out into the open.
No real arse kickings as yet, but I'm definitely playing wide and gradually rather than charging through fog gates with loads of souls and no Flasks.

There's a camera option that you should absolutely toggle off, it auto corrects the angle and causes deaths on narrow ledges

Yeah, I miss it. The jump attack in this is pretty good but it's fucking annoying when it doesn't register you pressing up and R2 together.
Died a lot this evening. To some really bullshit bits too. The catacombs in particular can get to fuck. Stupid respawning skeletons. I ended up just cheesing them cos I figured out a way of getting them to dive at me and fall to their deaths. But it takes ages coaxing them out and then one will catch you with a bullshit flurry of attacks and you're dead.
The biggest problem which didn't exist in Elden Ring is invisible walls on stairs and tiny ledges. Absolutely infuriating rolling into an invisible wall or tiny incline only to get smashed. Gahhh.

Anyway... So far my journey has taken me mostly up and through the castle area. I found the blacksmith with the endless banging. Possibly the worst bit of sound design I've ever heard in a game. Makes me want to tear my cochlea out every time I pass through that area. I've ignored the massive headless stone boss thing. Been partly through the grassy wooded area. Got killed when I got stuck on some steps trying to run past the golem type guys.
Been killed by two fucking stupid gargoyles on a monastery roof. Tried to run through the ghost bit in the depths. That went terribly.
Progress is definitely bitty. I only upgraded two of my weapons to +1 after about 9 hours. Think I'm about level 22 and I still feel pretty squishy. Enemies punch harder than ER I think.

This is brilliant. All that hatred, all that frustration, all the bullshit camera, yet you're still doing it.
It brings a tear to my eye.
You *will* do it, and you bloody know it. And bizarrely, you'll Bloody love it.
The real dark souls starts here.
Tip, get a black Knight halberd. There's a black Knight in the basin that can drop it. It will solve all your queries.

Nah, man, farm the Balder knights for titanite shards (use at least 1 humanity to have a 1 in the top left corner, it helps with drops). Then use the titanite shards to upgrade your longsword (you do have a longsword, right?). Then go kill the gargoyles. If you are human, when you go up there, you will notice some markings on the floor near the fog gate. Activate those.

Tomo, if you kill the headless stone boss thing, you'll get the Crystal Nunchucks- most OP weapon in the game.

Longsword is the best weapon in the game. Fuck your stupid anime gigasword masamune halberd fantasy axes. Longsword is where it's at. Sir Theodric killed Manus and Kalameet with a longsword, so it will be good enough for you, as well.

JonFE would tell you that the Drake Sword is where it's at. You don't even have to worry about stat scaling with it (or with Pyromancy, for that matter), just powerlevel Vitality and Endurance and add some Attunement for spell slots!

(although come to think of it I think he did level Strength without realising it did sweet fuck all for boosting damage... But yeah, "No Stat Scaling" for his very first Souls run, basically )

I like the longsword, but my heart belongs to the Balder side sword.
Edit: But as above, as long as you can farm enough drake scales, the Drake sword will see you all the way to the end of a new play through. Quickly becomes obsolete for NG+ though.
