I can now tell people I am 10 commendations and 68 dungeons away from getting my mentor crown… which will be removed as soon as possible so people don’t expect me to know what they are doing.

Still playing a little bit. Trying to get back into Warrior to finish off the xpac story before Endbringers hits but my confidence is a little low to jump into the dungeons, PLUS for some reason it's gated behind some level 50 raid content or something??

I got up to 50 and did the MSQ then parked the game for a bit. Really enjoyed it, and the Ninja job, but will likely be a while before I play through Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers etc. New World on the horizon and I'm trying to finish off the MQ in ESO, having only ever played the Morrowind expansion region and still way off level cap.
Game does seem to be enjoying a real moment in the limelight atm, what with the fiasco going on over at Blizzard/Activision.

Just got the Polar Bear, I think it's pretty cute, but it was weird seeing them wave in the cutscene.
In other news, friend and I just finished Heavensward last night too, really enjoyed it. Definitely better writing and voice acting to ARR.
Just got to get through all the patch quests then on to Stormblood!

Much fewer patches in the sequence to Stormblood (and again post SB, and post Shadowbringers), but they deal with increasingly meaningful events. You're a long way from the adventurer that made it, now.

Nice, I got my polar bear last night but it’s stuck in the wait until I am bored pile because I also bought the cruise chaser mount and it is already my favourite by far. It has the best music in the game (perfect Alexander) and the land to air transformation is immense.

So I've started playing this and moreover it's my first ever MMO, so it feels a bit overwhelming. Got my arcanist up to level 9 already, been pottering around the first town doing a few delivery quests, fighting a few low level monsters, and just generally getting the hang of the controls. As so often happens when I play RPGs though, I'm now convinced I've picked the wrong class and am thinking of starting again with a more basic tanky melee type character. Just feel like hitting stuff with a massive sword might be more fun than spell casting. Or should I stick with my summoner for now? Thoughts/advice from the veterans here?

Arcanist, so you will have started in Limsa Lominsa. From the completion of your level 10 class quest (not the same as the main story), you will be able to unlock other classes. For now, you'd be able to pick up Marauder in Limsa (great axe, is a Tank) or Rogue (dual wields daggers, is a DPS). You can freely play any class on your character, as long as you can unlock them.
From level 15 Main Scenario Quest, you will be able to visit the other two starting cities. Ul'dah will let you access Pugilist (melee DPS who punches for great justice), Gladiator (sword and board, is a Tank), and Thaumaturge (ranged magic DPS), whilst Gridania opens access to Archer (ranged physical DPS), Lancer (melee DPS with a big spear), and Conjurer (Healer).
Basically, if you're not feeling the class you started as, you can change very soon, so I'd recommend hanging with where you are.
The classes mentioned all evolve into Jobs at level 30 (complete the full class quest line, and pass a Main Scenario requirement - a quest called "Sylph-management"). Arcanist is the only class in the game that can evolve into two different Jobs - Summoner, as you mentioned (Magic DPS) and Scholar (Healer). Marauder will become Warrior, Gladiator > Paladin, Conjurer > White Mage, Thaumaturge > Black Mage, Archer > Bard, Lancer > Dragoon, Rogue > Ninja, Pugilist > Monk.
Any other jobs have much higher requirements, so those are basically your options at the moment.

Ah right so you can switch jobs? Sweet. Thanks for the info. I'd only read a little bit about classes before starting, and liked the idea of a summoned pet, though so far it's not doing much damage. Cool that you can try out other roles without starting from scratch.

Plus the beauty of the class system is that you can change at anytime, so you don't lose any progress in a particular job or have to reroll a new character, especially if you spent ages in it like me

Well, you're bloody minded at least. Extreme trials will need a static group but you already know that Mehh this post is reading way more negative than I intend. Sorry

An official FFXIV mentor you say? Excellent as I have questions:
Is there a way to show quest markers on the mini map when you're not already in the same area as the target? Any time I start a quest in a town where the goal is out in the world, I'm having a tough time finding the right exit from the town to get to that area. The layout of Limsa Lominsa is confusing AF.
Also, on the UI, what the heck is the little grid on the bottom right with the blue and green dots?

You can turn UI elements on or off either in the HUD Layout (right clicking on the element in that mode will make it invisible, although some can't be hidden), or from the one of the Character Configuration.

OK level 12, have tweaked the UI a bit, and am getting the hang of the combat which seems a lot simpler than I first thought. Did my first "instanced" MSQ mission which hints at a larger goal/plot. Can already feel my OCD kicking in in terms of wanting to do every single side quest I come across, even if it's ten levels below me. Yeah I can see myself getting into this. It feels quite polished, I guess that's what 10+ years of updates gets you. Someone send me something by moogle mail please!

Finally got to the start of Heavansward yesterday. Though the story was good it also felt like a right slog from what I thought was the end of ARR. So much 'go here and talk' now 'go here and talk' with very little to actually do. For about 10 hours! Looks like things will pick up very quickly now though.

Yeah the post ARR stuff is generally considered the worst bit of the game. It has some great fights but the general questing to get to them is long and arduous.

There was a lot of filler in ARR, like getting goblin cheese(??), that seemed immaterial to the main story. HW was much better as I said above.
Friend and I are about halfway through Dragonsong now.

Yeah, I think a lot of the stuff is just world building stuff, growing your legend but could have been done with less quests absolutely. On top of that there is no XP for the quests so it feels a bit like your not making progress.
I will say though, I think the quests are a product of their time. Obviously these are quest lines released between expansions so I am assuming 10-12 quests every 3 months or so probably didn’t feel as long or painful than they do now.

And guess you actually had to be running dungeons and gearing up etc to progress as opposed to steaming through everything first go.
The trials and raids in crystal tower were fun though. Want more of that please.

We've pretty much followed mainline quests since starting playing and we're at level 64-65, HW caps at at 60?
We've never had to go away and level to carry on the main story, it's one of the things we've found quite refreshing in an mmo.
We do a lot of fates as we run around, so I guess stuff like that helps.
