Loving the armor sets you get as reward for lvl 50 job quests, though the summoner's hat looks a bit... odd. Ahh, the summoner head dong

Hmmmm. Usually I bought the expansions for this once they were on sale, played through the story for a month or two, and then unsubbed.
Now I'm pondering playing Endwalker at launch (cause that's always fun in MMOs), but I need to catch up on the story (and raid / dungeon?) content post 5.2 (IIRC).
Does anyone have a rough idea how long that should take?

Just MSQ content, 5.3 to 5.55 will probably be about 10-12 hours. Eden and Nier raids should come through fast enough on roulette.
If you wanted to catch up on Bozja for a Resistance Weapon, that might take a bit more investment, but could still be feasible.

I actually quite like fishing. It's relaxing, and takes you to quiet remote areas you might not normally go. Same here. I had it levelled to 80 a long time ago (helped massively by ocean fishing) and my other gatherers still aren't there. I love finding a quiet little spot and seeing what bites. It's definitely been made easier to level, however, by being stupidly overlevelled for the earlier class quests, though.

As a scholar main, I am not concerned. I am pretty happy with the healing kit as it is at the moment. Maybe some higher potancy by healing would be nice and a smarter fairy (which they hinted about). Honestly, it may have seemed barebones but I am fine with that. The 1.5 sec cast time for attacks is very good. Yeah, I never run out of ways to cure people unless things are going spectacularly wrong, but I'd like more damage buttons. Fairy tether seems like the worst bit - too long to charge, too tricky to use in movement heavy fights because you can ground the fairy in one spot unless you interrupt the skill. I'd rather it just be a dps button, tbh. I've just levelled SCH to 80 after being a WHM main for most of FFXIV's life and levelling AST previously. Now he's got his full kit, I do like the flexibility of the class - however, as you say, when things go spectacularly wrong I really miss WHM's 'oh shit' buttons to save the day. Fairy tether is pretty useless for the amount of healing it gives - I'm really disappointed by it; would make more sense for it to create a barrier maybe.

Doing alright, have finally upgraded to the full game so have been hiring retainers and also dipped a toe into PvP (Frontline, which was chaotic to say the least). At around lvl 46 MSQs and am levelling up my Summoner, Warrior and Dragoon in parallel (all around lvl 53). Think I'm gonna pretty much mainline the MSQ for a bit now.

Once you hit the L50 MSQs it's a few rough days to complete them haha. I havent had much time to play since I finished ARR but I had a couple of hours today so I started mining. It's so addictive, it's made me look forward to botany as well.

I've been having a torrid time of late. Started getting dx11 errors that has been causing the game to crash. I've reinstalled the game 3 times now and although it works for a few hours, the same issue comes up.
Getting a bit annoyed now as I am wasting my sub. I have contacted squeenix and sent some files to them to look at.

A few people have said to play in windowed mode and ensure your drivers are up to date, but nothing seems to work for ms.

I get the DX11 errors which crash to desktop whenever the game runs for long periods of time too, glad it's not just me.

Yeah, it seems to be a random issue with folk. I thought it might be a graphics card or disk issue but even new, beefier systems than my own get hobbled.
I have installed on 2 different drives including my main drive as I have heard that is better but still no luck. I am tempted getting the PS5 version just to be able to play it and also on offer at the moment but worried I would hog the TV from the missus, haha.

Hahahaha, I play on my loungeroom TV via my PC, so can confirm it definitely gets a workout (much to her dismay) when I get stuck in on FF. If you buy the PS version are you able to continue playing PC characters and vice versa or do you have to start from scratch again?

Oh man that's awesome, will definitely end up picking it up again once I can grab a PS5. They're still bloody hard to grab in Aus atm.

Only caveat is that you need to purchase the clients separately - your account gives you the ability to log in on any platform, but if that platform doesn't have all the content available...
I imagine if you're still in free trial land, that's no issue. Should just be able to grab the base client that goes all the way to patch 3.55 from the Lodestone.

I recently decided to bind all my skills to my MMO mouse (I had been using it just for buffs/debuffs and other oGCDs). It was rough the first couple of days but now I like this way of playing much more.

Rolled credits on ARR, and am now working my way through the subsequent patch quests. Of all the pop culture references to be found in FFXIV quest titles, "You Have Selected Regicide" is my favourite so far. Bravo to whoever came up with that. Been dabbling in Blue and Red Mage jobs, and am finding the latter pretty cool, though quite punishing when you mess it up. Also been soloing some dungeons with my squadron team, and finding it nice to take my time a bit and explore rather than legging it at full pelt to keep up with folks who just want to finish as quickly as possible.

Congrats 👍, hope the prae run went ok. The next little run of quests are by far the most arduous, so don’t feel like toy have to rush through them to heavensward (which seems to be a major cause of fatigue).

Tbh I find all the patch quests drag a bit, but if you think about it, they were meant to span the void between expansions so it kind of makes sense.
Nearly at the end of drag-onsong, there is no chance I'll be ready for Shadowbringers by November.

The pre expansion wait is usually 6 months + so it’s even more chomping at the bit for the next part of the story (especially when you consider the .4 & .5 patches are all set up).

Just completed my first raid. After deciding not to bother with raids at all, I accidently stumbled into one by doing the Crystal Tower series of quests post-ARR (I mistakenly thought this was leading to the second deep dungeon but apparently that comes later). So I watched a quick tutorial video and jumped in. Seems that many of the mechanics can now be ignored due to most people being over-geared, which was a relief for me as I fucked up and died several times. At least the whole thing was fairly quick and I was able to be carried through. Might do a few more of these low level ones in that case.

Syrcus Tower done with my red mage. Really enjoyed that, and leaping towards a boss for some hard hitting rapier moves then backflipping away again feels seriously bad ass. I also re-ran LotA and nailed it this time. Raids are a lot more fun than I expected!
Edit: What do I do with all these music sheets?

If they are "Faded copies of..." then are crafting ingredients for songs you can play on the housing / inn room Orchestrion (jukebox, basically). Otherwise, they are the full version, and can be used to add to your Orchestrion list (default is CTRL+O, I think). Or you can sell them, but honestly, most aren't worth a lot. Some from later or more niche content can be worth a fair bit, but they are rare.

Crystal Tower raids done and I've almost reached Heavensward, have just fought Shiva. Can see the quality of the writing and voice acting improving already. I recognised Ser Aymeric's voice actor - he also played Hawkwood the Deserter in Dark Souls 3. Very glad to hear they replace Minfilia's voice actor, she's utterly abysmal. Am now maining a Bard and enjoying the mix of DoTs, long range attacks that you can execute on the move, and team buffs. Might actually stick with this job for a bit. Though definitely gonna give Machinist a try too.

I like that they manage to make Machinist and Bard feel different enough from each other, despite being ranged projectile fighters. Bard was my main all through A Realm Reborn, and it's still my primary DPS to this day. The DOT management and song windows affecting the mechanics all feel pretty satisfying.
And yeah, the new cast is really good. You may start noticing some of the others, especially the few who turn up from Game of Thrones.
