Yeah, for sure. It's a really good game on its own terms too so don't feel like you are obliged to play other games in the series either.

Is 0 a good jumping on point? I’ve never played one before and a friend keeps insisting I must play it I've played 0 through 7 and 0 is still my favourite. Best combat system and really, really funny side quests.

Characters look incredible in cutscenes, but when they showed gameplay/combat, it looked much like Lost Judgement. Still very much looking forward to that. I’ve missed Kiryu.

Assuming a Hawaii setting rather than a more mainstream American city... Not sure what to think either way though...
The trailer for the character though

It was quite a surprise to see them on GOG, tempted to double-dip in support...

Theyve also brought on youtuber YongYea as the voice of the English dub for Kiryu going forward. The same guy famously pro Gamergate and pro "it's fine if you say the n word in private". Ah well, not like anyone is going to play the English dub over Japanese at this point.

You know.
It’s funny to me. I’ve been with this franchise from the beginning. I remember the first game on PS2 had Michael Madsen and Mark Hamill on the English dub, and people hated it. So Sega went “wow, okay, guess subtitles only from here on out.” They started adding, excuse me, nobodies to the their later games, and now people are like “finally, I don’t have to read it!”

It always seems to be a much bigger issue in the US from what I see, with the whole 'no dub, no buy' sentiments. You can see it just by watching the US and UK Nintendo Directs where the Japanese staff all get overdubbed on the US streams and happily subtitled over here. Personally, I almost always got for subs and original voices (and am a fan of fan-made unsubstantiated (if only Forbidden Siren got one...). I have been playing the new FF with Engmish dub though as seems to be the official choice.
Still waiting for full confirmation that Kiryu's new game gets a physical over here... I will pre-order as usual if it does. Still tempted to do a Y1 (undub) and 2 replay at some point as I finished those in the days where I didn't try and complete all the side quests and sidestories to consider it complete enough for me. Y3 too as the original was quite cut. Still got Kenzan and Dead Souls to finish too.

Tore myself away from the caberet minigame in K2 to take some snaps of Sotenbori, Yakuza still has some of the best looking cities in videogames imo. Ugh, Konami levels of stupid there.

Safe to say I won't be playing in English dubs. Sounds like a young man putting on an older man's voice, as opposed to Kuroda who just is the same age.

As someone who doesn't follow the series that closely, but thoroughly enjoyed the turn based combat of Like a Dragon, can someone tell me which are the next turn based games in the series? There are so many games and titles I am getting somewhat confused.

The next one will be 8 - LaD was the first and only one so far.

Sequel to Like a Dragon is coming out next year.
Titled Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
The Man who changed his name is this year and the more traditional gameplay.

Cheers. So basically I just need to play Infinite Wealth. I'm not interested in the non turn based gameplay.

Yep. They confirmed all Ichiban games will be turn based.

I recently made a post to the effect that I'd ordered Like a Dragon: Ishin! from Amazon, then deleted said post after cancelling the order in question; I was keen to check out Nier: Automata, and figured that'd scratch my hack and slash itch for the foreseeable future. (I'm only a couple of hours into Nier, but I reckon ditching Ishin! was a good idea - I can already tell that Automata is a *lot* of game, and I'll want to play Replicant soon thereafter as well, so it'll be a good long while before I'm in the market for something of a similar ilk.) But hey, I digress. I may not be interested in Like a Dragon: Ishin! anymore, but I remain intrigued by the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series in general. Like Richyroo, though, I'm a tad overwhelmed by the sheer number of games in the franchise, particularly when spin-offs are taken into consideration! Is this an accurate (-ish) summary, in terms of what's available in the West on PS4 and PS5? - 0, Kiwami, Kiwami 2, Remastered Collection (3/4/5), 6: The Song of Life - one protagonist, real-time action brawler/beat 'em up combat.
- Yakuza: Like a Dragon - different protagonist, turn-based combat.
- Judgment/Lost Judgment - a detective-based spin-off, different protagonist again, same combat model as Yakuza 0-6.
- Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise - Yakuza crossed with an established anime franchise, same real-time combat as above.
- Ishin! - a Yakuza period piece, with the traditional combat model made more hacky-slashy due to the focus on weapons (gun/katana).

Broadly yeah, but there's also a big division in the real-time combat systems between the old style (used from the start up until 5/Ishin/Lost Paradise - in other words, the games that also came out on PS3) and the newer, more physics-based style used from 6, Kiwami 2 and the Judgment games when they went PS4 only.
Probably not worth worrying about too much if you're playing them individually but if you go from, say, Kiwami 2 to the remastered 3, that's why that feels extremely different.

Been pretty heavy having about 11 releases on Xbox over the last couple years.
Think the Zombie spin off and Fist are the only ones not ported over.

uiruki Thanks! That's interesting - how do these differences manifest in actual gameplay, if I may ask?

uiruki Thanks! That's interesting - how do these differences manifest in actual gameplay, if I may ask? The original system feels a lot 'tighter', especially as it goes on. Moves are more responsive and it feels more like an extension of Spikeout. The 'original' PS2 games which are kind of their own system are a bit different again so 3 was a little bit of a step back as they moved to PS3 and did things like getting rid of loading screens going into battle. In the end by Kiwami 1 you've got a character with 4 different battle styles that you can change between freely, all with loads of moves and heat actions.
6 in particular feels really woolly because they basically had to redo the original system they came up with - the demo they released played more like a Batman Arkham game with a Ninja Gaiden 3 style 'hammer button for more damage' system, believe it or not, which people were negative on. Even in the end the number of heat attacks is way down so it feels much more limited.
Kiwami 2 isn't too bad and a massive improvement on 6 but it's definitely floaty and lacks impact compared to 0 or Kiwami 1, but Judgment then actually takes advantage of the system by giving you a much more agile character to play as and particularly in Lost Judgment it feels much snappier as you sprint around and bounce off walls. I'm confident Gaiden will be really good, as if there's one thing that RGG Studio are good at, it's fixing problems in sequels.

Thanks, man! (Seriously, that's very helpful indeed.) The game that interests me the most is Yakuza: Like a Dragon - something about the turn-based combat really appeals, whereas the real-time brawler stuff has never been my thing. I was originally drawn to Ishin! due to its focus on weapons, as opposed to fisticuffs; however, the gameplay footage I've watched since makes combat seem functionally identical to the regular Yakuza fare. Just to be clear, I'm not knocking Yakuza's combat! I just don't think it's for me, is all. My dumb ass saw a katana and went, "Ooh, Sekiro/Ghost of Tsushima!", when it's clearly nothing of the sort.
