It is funny seeing all the grifters decrying it as satanic music considering Gojira's music is all about nature, becoming a better person etc.

Monastic doom, very nice.

Not the biggest fan of hardcore, though there are a few exceptions like Zulu or Pest Control, and this would be another. What about Gulch?

Opeth coming back with a new album this year. New single is mostly more of the recent sound but it's even got the growls back. Seen a few live performances live recently as Mikael's growls are stronger than they've been in a while, definitely something they've been working on it seems. New drummer is pretty good too. Doubt that means full on death metal in this album but his growls are some of the greatest so I'll be glad to hear more of them in new material.

I'm getting a way heavier vibe generally than their other recent stuff. Maybe it's the halo effect of the growls but the whole thing feels a lot more metal generally to me. I really like it. Of the prog rock era I've liked a few songs but generally it's just not grabbed me no matter how many chances I've given it. In Cauda Venemum in particular did not do anything, the others all had a few really good tracks. But this new one - I think Akerfeldts harsh vocals may have always been the killer ingredient for me, that probably explains it. Also, album cover is metal monochrome vs the last few brown/red colour schemes. Therefore, metal Opeth is back. Looking forward to seeing them headline Bloodstock with a full death metal set a week from today

Guys, if you're interested this is genuinely the heaviest thing I've ever heard. I have never been scared by a song before this

New Gaerea album is promising to be sick. I've previously liked them but not loved them, the album didn't really hold my full attention. The singles and blurb so far suggest a slightly wider array of sound. That remains to be seen but it's on the right track
This is fantastic btw, YouTube keeps pushing it to me for some reason but absolutely no complaints - it's like a perfect mix of metalcore and black metal? btw is everyone sleeping on Cauchemar ^ or just not a fan? I was properly blown away by it, and it's unlike anything I've heard before

I wasn’t a fan sorry. Seemed like 10 minutes of avant guard with 90 seconds of djent stuck in. I think a lot of the heaviness is coming from it being too compressed as well. Horses for courses though, and it did have some atmosphere.
Found myself listening to this for the first time in years, and this is how it’s done:

Cauchemar is an example of where I can recognise the artistry and it's heaviness but having listened to it once I have zero desire to re listen. I need something more than just a scary sounding wall of noise.

Thanks for sharing that Cauchemar song blizeh that is something else indeed. Not sure it'll get many repeat listens, but it was very good. Found the band (Mirar) on Spotify so going to listen to their other singles out of curiosity (no album yet).

Is there any modern metal kicking about that people can recommend with fairly clean, well-sung vocals instead of guttural howls or screamed lyrics.
I have a weird love/hate relationship with metal - I love the musicianship, the riffs and the heaviness of the sound when it comes to the instruments but have always struggled a bit with the vocals, lyrics and imagery.

Clean or just intelligible?
Plenty of prog wtih clean well-sung vocals, but it's not really my cup of tea. Maybe Leprous?
Also a fair bit of trad metal and doom/stoner with clean (or at least not harsh) vocals but that tends not to fit the "modern" tag despite being new. Could try Crypt Sermon?

I'll probably be handing in my metal card here but the best examples I can give are groups like Baroness, early Metallica, Pallbearer, Motorhead etc. I love Deafheaven's first few albums too the vocals are pretty much the opposite of what I'm after (though they're that buried in the mix the voice basically becomes another instrument).
I think I just want some heavy stuff I can sing along to. Maybe I need to look into prog a bit more.

Not sure what you mean by "modern metal", because the following bands have been at it for quite some time, but you can check out the following (at no specific order): Arena, Borealis, Conception, Evergrey, Kamelot, Leprous, Masterplan, Psychotic Waltz, Pyramaze, Redemption, Riverside, Shadow Gallery, Soen, Vanden Plas, Symphony X, Temic, Teramaze, not to mention 3 Greek bands I love: Silent Wedding, Sunburst, Sacred Outcry...
...and I'm sure if you put them on Spotify and listen to them/like them, more will be recommended.

Sorry, by modern metal I just mean something in the last 5-10 years by bands that are currently still going (so if I like it I've got the chance to see them live).
Don't have Spotify, maybe that's where I'm going wrong.
Thanks for the recommendations!

You are most welcome!
Most of the bands I mentioned are still going and gigging, so if you like any you probably can see them live as well (at least the EU based ones).

I nearly suggested Baroness. OK - so not too clean if you're talking Motorhead and early Metallica!
You also mentioned Pallbearer. Doom-wise I've really enjoyed REZN's last couple of albums, especially Solace, and Ufomammut's latest album Hidden.
Couple of bands I caught at Bloodstock and rated that could qualify for this: Grove Street on the crossover thrash side of things Asomvel if you like Motorhead/old school stuff Warpstormer for rocky/stoner stuff. Loved their T-shirts but they'd sold out (Fuzz for the Fuzz God, Riffs for the Riff Throne)
Oh yeah and Green Lung

This is a bit of a random recommendation, but Bilmuri's new album is basically a pop/country album with down-tuned guitars and a sprinkling of heavy parts: Also, the music videos are absolutely top tier - just him doing gardening basically (:

How do they not get sore throats singing like that all the time
I'm with Reg, just can't get into the screaming. Liked the music but then the vocals start and I'm like ahhhh. I like Acid Bath but at least it's legible, he still sings proper and it's not all about Satan

Been listening to the new Zeal & Ardor album.
I like it, but it's very odd. I think each individual song is great, and it sounds fantastic, and Manuel Gagneux's voice is amazing (tying into the conversation above, fans of "clean" singing should like most of what he does, though he does still do a few black metal harsh vocals here and there.)
But whilst Hide in Shade still contains the black-metal-meets-spirituals sound that the band focused on previously, for the most part the band are exploring different areas. Disease gave me Bowie-influence vibes. Are You The Only One Now? made me think of Blur (at least until the blast beats kick in). Thrill made me think of Queens of the Stone Age. Clawing Out has a tempo shifting primalism that reminded me slightly of Nine Inch Nails - or it's just come to me more like something like Mike Patton's Tomahawk, or Fantomas. Whilst the harsh vocals and tremelo picked distorted guitars make appearances, it's much more cleanly sung and use undistorted guitar, and there's a few tracks where synths come to the fore.
And it's all very good. But by going off in so many different directions it just lacks cohesion. It sounds more like a collection of unrelated songs, or maybe 3 or 4 different EPs that have been packaged together.
All of which is to say it's actually really good, just not what I was expecting (which the lead singles had kind of suggested), and it's just a bit strange to digest. but I keep going back to it.
Didn't mean this to become a review but there you go. 4/5 stars.

Figured some of you might like this, it's just the whole goblin screech, jumping between different sections seems a bit too chaotic for me to ever go on my playlist. Still, the song is technically impressive.

Incinceration fest lineup is looking very beefy for 2025.
Triptykon Celtic Frost set, Decapitated, Spectral Wound, Blood Incantation, Conjurer, Blackbraid, Undergang.
I'd go and see each of those if they paid separately. The prospect of clashes and charging around Camden trying to get to venues on time isn't mega appealing though.
