The last jedi was the only film in the sequels that wasn't entirely creatively bankrupt. Though I liked them all more than the sequels (which is a low bar) It's not a good film but at least it tried to offer something different. I like the Mandalorian and Andor. Boba Fett was absolute shit and haven't watched the others. Though frankly I'm not a huge SW fan anyway, don't even think the classic films are amazing (though Empire comes close) There's an issue in general where nobody is willing to make low budget genre shows that can take the time to find their feet. Equally because everything costs so much everyone is very rush averse so things can often be a bit bland. All the sequel films were better made than the prequels. Not to say there aren't elements about the prequels I kind of like (podracing, Darth Maul, Ewen McGregor clearly living out his fantasies), but they are much worse written and poorly directed. Rise is probably on par, but the prequels are clearly made by someone who no one is daring to question. I agree Last Jedi is the only one that tries to do something different. Personally thought it mostly succeeded at that and I liked it a lot. Easily the best SW film since Empire, for me (Rogue One is great too). Obviously, it has flaws, but still liked much more than disliked. Really hope Rian Johnson gets to make his trilogy, as I expect if he was let loose in the universe and able to guide a whole trilogy, as well as not tied down to the Skywalker saga, the results could be something special. When it comes to the TV shows, streaming services as a whole, and not just the Disney franchise stuff, are really suffering with the ballooning budgets. They probably need to have a crash to reset the way they operate (much like gaming might need it).

I don't dislike any of the new trilogy, but I think the setup was spectacularly sloppy, effectively going from the victory in rotj to what seems like an even bigger and badder empire. Like couldn't they have had a couple decades of peace, and then made the first film about a new enemy or something?

I will always hold to the belief that the prequel trilogy had an excellent arc running throughout and the basic plan for it was really solid. With a couple more re-writes and a few changes it could have been fantastic (an older Anakin in Phantom aged around Luke's age in Hope, don't keep splitting Obi Wan and Anakin so that there can be a real friendship, ditch trade negotiations and make it more about outter worlds being left out whilst inner worlds live in luxury). I can see the changes that could be made to what is there for something very special.
With the sequel trilogy, although there is stuff I like about the individual films (and will still say TLJ is excellent and one of the best Star Wars films) and the films are generally better made then the prequel ones, I can't see what you would change other than ripping it all up and starting again, with a stronger coherent through line across the trilogy. The First Order is lazy, Snook was a nothing villain and they just throw in the Emperor at the end because they were out of ideas. Kylo Ren isn't too bad and I like Rey. I like a lot of the choices in TLJ (Rey being born to nobody and her whole story in that film, Luke's crisis of faith and the way the Force is talked about), but a lot of that film does lead to dead ends for the final film (or, at least, dead ends for someone as creative as J. J Abrams).
The blame really has to be on Disney and the producers not making sure there was a strong guiding hand throughout the sequel trilogy who had a clear, unique vision with what to do with it.

The prequels and sequels all have some good and some bad. None of the films are great and if they weren’t Star Wars then they’d have been mostly forgotten about by now.
The original trilogy and the love of them does a lot of heavy lifting in keeping the franchise alive.

Criticism of Star Wars is kind of futile as it has basically the same problem as every other lumbering franchise: the people ultimately in charge of making it do not give a fuck about anything other than making money.
Marvel, Star Trek, Aliens, whatever. All the same problems. They don’t want to run out of story so it’s all just inconsequential, milquetoast shite that won’t hook new fans and existing ones will ever rewatch

The universe itself has enough potential but that seems like all they’re relying on for anything new. No one is asking whether the story they’re telling is worth telling or is interesting enough.
Andor again being an exception, largely because the writer is far more talented than the franchise deserves at this point.
As with all the franchises, I’m happy if the quality is good and it beings something interesting and/or progresses the wider story in a meaningful way. Filling in gaps or several films/shows in a row being really shit and that should pretty much kill it off.

I suppose it’s like actual comic books. The writer of the individual project can’t really do much to affect the wider universe or have many/any lasting consequences.

They can. Lucasfilm have people that vet the stories and ensure consistency throughout their universe. They can always undo choices at a later date, but that doesn't seem to the be the issue at hand. Nothing that I'm aware of is being rewritten or redesigned, it's just the stories they're telling have issues, though mostly with substance and pacing, not narrative direction.
I don't think The Acolyte is as bad as the internet deemed it (18% RT), and it's scored reasonably well in critic reviews (78% RT). It was hated for reasons outside of the show itself. Ironically, Andor, widely regarded as being the best thing that Star Wars has going right now, is the one with the least overall consequence because we already mostly know how it all wraps up, in RO and the wider universe in general. The interesting part isn't the result, though the payoff obviously needs to land, the story itself is the journey that needs viewer investment and that's where the other stuff seems to be struggling.

Andor is a good example of the counter argument that you do a good story without risking potential to do further stories / sequels.
Rogue One tbh is the same, even going so far as literally handing off to ANH.
The previous expanded universe had a zillion interesting stories taking place all over Star wars time line and place.

The Acolyte was hated for things that had nothing to do with the show, unfortunately it was also pretty terrible. I think reviewers only got a couple of episodes to base their reviews on so I can see why they thought it was ok.
And we don’t really know much about how things end up in Andor as the show is more about the character and not events. We know he survives and joins the rebels but that’s it, there’s a lot to work with outside that.

Yeah The Acolyte wasn't helped by the attacks on it by the twats but it also wasn't helped by not being very good and cost a fortune. It losing its audience as the series progressed was the final nail in the coffin.
It may have done better if they'd released all of them in one day, it's probably a better binge than watching one a week. Not that I'd do it.

If someone did an edit of it into 2 hours then it’s probably alright.

I thought it was...OK. But it really screamed of a movie being broken up into tv show bitesize pieces but there was in no way enough content to sustain a full series.

I was hopeful and the first two episodes tricked me into thinking it could be alright, but then it just didn’t really do much.
The costume and set design varied in quality so wildly, and most of the acting was terrible. The make-up they gave that Jedi guy to make him look old was insane. Squid Games guy was surprisingly bad, too.

I thought The Acolyte was pretty wank. It’s not that it’s bad Star Wars, it’s just bad TV. It’s dumb, thoughtless garbage.
Like when she’s kicking the floating guy and you think ‘why the fuck have they put that kid in a comedy wig and beard?’ and the next episode is set in the past so he’s normal and all the old people are badly de-aged. It’s so stupid. Just no care and attention has been put into it.

Like The Acolyte, where there are three, maybe technically four or even five.

It does feel as if it's extremely difficult to have a realistic, honest conversation about where Star Wars is as a going concern from an industry POV as so much of the legitimate criticism is lumped in with so much toxicity. So you end up with the nonsense that xyz was bad due to wokeness or xyz wasn't bad it was due to fan toxicity and bigotry that caused it to underperform.

The most annoying thing about the culture wars discourse is that the thing these freaks are mad at usually turns out to be shit anyway.
It almost gives the studios a get out of jail free card because, no, The Acolyte didn’t suck because it had space lesbians in it, it sucked because it sucked.

I finished The Acolyte. There were episodes I enjoyed but overall it was far from classic. There *were* some enjoyable episodes and bits. I hated the episodes and flashbacks with the Witches, and didn’t understand some of that, probably because it wasn’t engaging me and I ended up on my phone.
It had some great fights and choreography, and I liked the wu-shu type styling of it quite a lot. However you’d also have awesome duels that just were cut away from abruptly and this happened a few times! I thought Osha/Mae and Mr Squid Game were excellent and it’s a shame their potential has been wasted on something that has obviously been dropped like a stone. I wasn’t even aware this show existed.
I still have Ahsoka to watch, and Rosario Dawson is usually good value so fingers crossed.
I’ve long wanted to do the chronological presentation you can do on Disney Plus but every time I’ve tried to watch the Clone Wars stuff I’ve bounced off the first episode. Will it reward me? It seems a big commitment.

It looks fucking brilliant.
Didn't know I needed a Huttese version of Major Tom (Coming Home) by Peter Schilling, but there it is.
