Yeah it's very slick and immediately fun to play. I was hoping to get my kids set up to play it, but there are still dodgy user-created game modes sneaking through the 7+ age rating I stuck on their accounts, so I guess I will wait until Epic sorts that out first.

Kids have been on the LEGO mode since getting home from school.
Say what you want about Fortnite, but you can't fault the effort that goes into some of these updates. There's not another live service game on the market that comes close in that regard.
But yeah, mode looks great, there's even shades of Valhalla and the like in there.

I've never played Minecraft but I imagine it's a lot like this. It's basically resource gathering and building a village. I think it'll be fine for kids as it's initially one player.
I found the building a bit confusing as you had to follow a specific build rather than slap a wall up anywhere.
That might be my elderly brain and kids might find it a lot easier.

Not that I've bothered yet but you can do custom stuff by selecting the parts, you won't get things like walls and foundations until you've built some of the set plans.
I do wish the set plans would let you do more things at once, for example building a log cabin requires you to put up a lot of the same roof parts but you do them in one small bit then a large bit, then another small bit, then another large bit when there's no real reason why you couldn't just build loads of the same thing without changing parts.

So I linked my Lego account but never got the skin? Did they not send them yet? Have I missed a step somewhere?

Got some co-op LEGO done now and it's pretty damn great, the sharing of keys so worlds can be spun up when the owner of it isn't online takes away one of the more awkward things from a lot of non-dedicated server co-op gaming, which is nice.

I only played with the Lego mode for a few minutes, so it seemed like Minecraft without the creativity (mining, freeform building) but with a lot more structure. But if you can do more freeform building at a later stage, that'd address my main issue with the first impression. Haven't tried it, but the way they've set it up so you can easily invite up to 7 other mates to your world looks pretty good for kids. It's weird talking about this as Lego Minecraft when there are at least several other existing actual Lego Minecraft type games out there. They seem to be angling to make Fortnite more of a kid-friendly games hub. On the one hand I'm not sure about trying to get younger kids hooked on stuff like that, but on the other hand most of them are already playing it and I wish they'd had some of the younger age stuff and age ratings when mine were younger. I wish they had a 15 or 14 age rating though, for a few of those horror games. Right now if you permit Battle Royale (12+) you basically have to permit everything. So I linked my Lego account but never got the skin? Did they not send them yet? Have I missed a step somewhere? I got mine instantly. It's quite a cool skin. Sorry, that doesn't help. Did you go through the link on this page? Not sure if you need to, but maybe. www.lego.com/en-gb/themes/fortnite/about

Tried the racing mode. Seems ok, but the whole pack was close together for the entire race, and even when I executed a turn perfectly I was getting overtaken by someone boosting. Possibly a touch of rubber-banding? But I doubt I’ll play enough to figure that out, it’s decent but not groundbreaking.
Someone earlier said it’s harder to get to the end of the new battle pass as it needs more XP. I think that’s true if you only play the Battle Royale mode, but it looks like there’s tonnes of opportunities to earn battle pass levels in the other modes- particularly the racing. Unsurprising really, as they’ll want people to do the other modes and spend VBux on cars, vinyls, wheels etc while they’re there.

Been playing since the big update. Never been much of a Fortnite guy other than playing it with my kid but it's really grabbed me. The Lego mode is class and the racing seems really decent. There's definite rubber banding but it feels like if you're in the lead and you execute perfectly you're still able to win. Probably needs tweaking in strength but I e not been mugged of 1st by pure rubber banding yet.

Yeah you get like 5 levels just for doing basic Lego stuff, that's like 25 stars. Also the BP goes to March, so there is loads of time.

Matchmaking was borked for me last night as well. But I could get in if I went back to the lobby and selected specific tracks. But then after a race I had to go back to the lobby and do it again.

Rather enjoyed the Rocket Racing today. Not sure how long lasting the appeal will be, but it has a bit more depth than initial impressions suggest. Might just be a good pick up and play occasionally game.
Kids have been loving Lego Fortnite. Survival mode is very much like an easy-enetry minecraft-lite, and sandbox mode seems to be mainly about blowing things up with hundreds of barrels of dynamite.

LEGO Fortnite becomes a lot more difficult when you leave the grasslands, the desert/ice biomes are not places to go in to unprepared, the animals are a lot trickier and the temperature changes require accounting for. The grasslands can be tricky at times too, wolves start being more frequent and there's some big monsters about. Certainly make a shield!
Running into AI human enemies can be fun too, some like to use dynamite like hand grenades.

The placeable dynamite barrels from Lego Sandbox should be a thing in regular fortnite. They'd be a bit like the gas canisters, but you could set them up all over the place and then set them off as traps, etc..

Fornite Festival is Rock Band without the peripherals. 1800 V bucks for the premium track can do one though. Way too much for what's on offer.

They’re going to make so. Much. Money.

The consistent player count on Lego is mind boggling. It could end up being bigger than the umbrella they've launched it under.

Tried the racing mode… Possibly a touch of rubber-banding? Follow-up - after coming first in ranked several times with a >10 second lead, I take this back. Just needed to get used to how much drifting and boosting it expects of you.

I think if the premium track was 1000 bucks and had some music I was keen on I'd go for it. I do like me a rhythm game. The jam stuff is quite cool..when there are more out there the mash ups you could make.

Up to four tracks I think. I have read they are adding support for the old plastic instruments in 2024. That will take all my time if so

Everyone poo poohs Fortnite but it really is going from strength to strength.
It's such a different beast to what it was years ago, and it's so much game for a f2p, no pay to win and is so polished.
It's even the most bumped thread here, so that alone says something 😅

If there was any way to get my Wii Guitar to play nice with the switch I'd be super happy right now. Kids are happy, as the music on Festival is apparently much more their speed than 70s rock and heavy metal on Guitar Hero
[edit] I've had a go now and it's ok, though it got a bit laggy at times which made it rather hard.
Playing with the keyboard/controller isn't half as much fun as a proper guitar peripheral though.
The combination of all the different modes, passes, etc.. has become a big of a mess.
Also, given the way they've just changed the locker, I find it kinda mind-boggling that you can't set a different skin for Lego mode and Regular mode. I'd kinda assumed that was what the locker changes were all in aid of.

Is this game known for being pretty easy?!
My just turned 8 year old was allowed to play it this weekend. He's been gaming of sorts since he was 5 but very Mario/Minecraft/Forza /FIFA orientated other than massively getting into Zelda Breath/Tears.
Out of the six rounds of Fortnite BR he played, he finished one in 99th place (looooser) but the other five, all were top twenty, two were top 10 and two were first motherfucking place.
I find that pretty nuts since he's never played a third person shooter or played competitively online. And didn't/doesn't know the mechanics or map.
Fair play to him though, his latest first place he also bagged 14kills which makes me wonder how TF everyone on there seemed so bad. My kid was making all the rookie mistakes like never reloading, looking at where rounds were firing to rather than from etc and yet was still dominating. May have to jump on myself.

It chucks you in some easy matches for like the first 10 or 20 games (probably mostly bots) until it starts matching based on a hidden skill rating.
Otherwise people wouldn't keep playing if they got chucked in with the sharks straight away 😅

Cheers - not gonna tell him that haha and dreading when proper matchmaking kicks in. Good system by Epic, clearly works. Would not have been the same experience if it was Battlefield or something, you're right. Bang. Dead. Bang. Dead.
He had me take a photo of him stood in front of the TV with the "Victory Royale" splash in the background. Wearing a huge shit-eating grin.
