So Disney have bought a $1.5 billion stake in Epic which will help create new experiences in Fortnite. The game continues to surprise me honestly. The Lego colab was pretty massive in itself, but getting Disney on board too in this manner? Epic seem the closest to actualising that damn metaverse when you consider all that's going for it. Disney Dreamlight Valley seems to be doing fine, and it has a gentle, Disney-fied battle pass of sorts… guess they saw the Fortnite player base and figured they could go a lot bigger.

For me it already has *too much stuff* going on, but that's probably just me.
Despite really enjoying the racing, I've hardly touched it for a month because I've been trying to do quests in Zero Build and Festival to unlock things.
Same goes for Lego. It seems like they've built a much better game than I expected, but I've not had much chance to get very far in it.
I don't think it should matter, as it's effectively 4 separate games. But the fact they're all kinda cross-linked means I constantly feel like I should be doing the other one.
They already do quite a lot of Star Wars and Marvel collabs, but I guess this could open the way to actual full-on Star Wars Fortnite or Marvel Fortnite games, with fully themed maps etc.. I'd be up for those. If i have time.

Heh, don't overthink it. There was already too much stuff with all the user content to keep you busy for 2 life times.
I'm happy just shooting things, not building, with the occasional festival when it tickles my fancy.

Tbh thinking about it more, the Disney thing is hardly surprising, there's already been loads of cross over stuff, like Star Wars.

It has to be the steps they’ve taken to fence off kid-friendly content from the rest of the “gun stuff”. Marvel and Star Wars are fine running around with machine guns, but they wouldn’t have wanted Mickey or Elsa doing it. Lego set the template for branching off into a separate area suitable for 7 year olds, but the foundations they laid for that must also have had the upcoming Disney/Pixar collaboration in mind too.
It could be even more huge than Lego Fortnite seemed at launch. I wonder what sort of game they’ll go for though. Dreamlight Valley is already a fairly competent Harvest Moon / Stardew Valley -like, and Lego Fortnite has survival/crafting covered.
Maybe some kind of open world exploration quest. If they can recapture the fun of the old Toy Story 3 sandbox mode, I’ll be in Day 1!

And they can sell you digital characters instead of having to manufacture physical toy figures for you to put in your game.
Still bitter about how much we paid for all infinity shit

You can always go and buy amiibos I'm really amazed they haven't (to my knowledge) announced any actual physical Fortnite Lego sets. Surely, at the very least, they're gonna do minifigs or something?! Anyway, kid was sick so today we watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the 80s live action one, not the new animated one). And lo and behold now they have a Kowabunga TMNT reward track and he really wants to get it for the Shredder skin. (Lego Shredder looks so cute btw).

To be honest while Fortnite does escape some of the more exploitive practices, it still makes use of a bunch of predatory tactics while largely appealing to kids. FOMO being a big one, the live service model that asks for constant logins and "grinding" to drive engagement, and even the way pre game lobbies are filled with skinned bots and dances that are thinly veiled adverts. They also had nothing protecting against accidental purchases until a lawsuit forced change there. It's far from clean imo. It could be much worse, but it's still not good. 'Tis how I see it anyway.
I did notice Epic Games has supposedly been hacked. Should I be worried if I just use another account login to log in to Epic Games?

Yeah to be sure, they use as many Dark Patterns as they can get away with- I just felt like the specific things called out in the article weren’t as relevant to Fortnite as they were to, say, a CoD or an Apex or even a Roblox.
…that’s what I’d have said in response to that “Rogueywon” guy (/s) who replied to me, except that EG’s comment system doesn’t allow replies to replies?? Guess it avoids arguments that go 50 replies deep, but it’s a bit mad not being able to comment on comments.

Ah, I guess Fortnite probably being the biggest game in that demographic means it'll always come up first I think EG do allow replies to replies though, not sure why you can't. Maybe they're scared we'll start a revolution.

Yeah, I feel like Fortnite's not too bad for this stuff. Relatively.
The main issue is the pressure to play it a lot before the season ends so you can get the thing that you need to level up for. Other than that it's not too pushy. Usually.
It hasn't really caused any issues with my two, other than one accidental skin purchase which we used as a life lesson. I've also kinda used it as a way to teach them about money. "They're your v-bucks, so if you *really* want you can buy that dance emote today. But if you do you won't have enough for the next battle pass".
I worry more about Roblox (and basically every other game that they want to play)

Though I should point out, every time you dance in Fortnite, exactly 3 children are pressured into buying a Rick Astley emote. There's no evidence for that, but it's scientific fact. Think of the children you monster

"They're your v-bucks, so if you *really* want you can buy that dance emote today. But if you do you won't have enough for the next battle pass". YES!! My exact tactic as well You can see the little cogs whirring away in their brains. The only time I've purchased extra v-bucks for them to buy extra dances / skins is when they've received cash for birthdays / christmas and that's what they want, it's fine in moderation. Otherwise they save up the v-bucks earnt from the Battle Pass to buy the next one, and that's great.
My boy has played for many 100s of hours and my girl has just started, I would say we've spent less than £50 all in over the past 4 years.

Btw, they have started to make it harder to get them all now though, by shoving a load of them into the bonus pass.
I've only just completed the first page and only a week to go.

I thought this too until I saw how easy it was to level the battle pass by playing the racing mode. Loads of EXP on offer just for doing races and drifting etc., not even having to be good at them. It’s devious of them forcing you into the other modes so you’ll maybe spend money there (those pesky Dark Patterns again), but I quite like the racing anyway so it wasn’t an issue.

Yeah, I noticed them moving the v-bucks into the bonus rewards section as well. You used to get 1500 vbucks for completing each battlepass, so if you got to 100 you'd make a profit of 550 vbucks per season. I think now you get 1000 vbucks for level 100, so you'd break even, but not really be able to save up any vbucks unless you get some bonus tiers. I can see why they'd do that, though it probably means more time grinding bonus tiers. Earning xp from different modes may be a reason, though I do feel like it's hard to commit enough time to do multiple modes. I was really into the rocket racing, but I basically had to abandon it because I needed to focus on Battle Royale (for the quest rewards, turtles and MGS stuff) and Festival (for some of the unlocks). I wish they'd merge the battle passes and xp *more*. It's confusing as-is. Royale, Lego and Racing are all gaining XP, but only Royale has its own battlepass. Festival has its own separate kind of xp and its own separate battlepass. Then you have all the different specific quest rewards in each mode. It's getting kinda hard to keep track of. Tbh, despite my joke, I'm actually still riding my first battle pass purchase and I've been playing for a couple of years now. Not bad for like £6? 😅 I bought a full battlepass for the eldest about 3 years ago, and a 550vbucks + skin starter pack for the youngest about 2 years ago, and that's all the cash I've spent on it. They've ridden those battlepasses ever since then. (Though they did occasionally buy something that meant they had to miss out on one battle pass before they built their vbucks back enough to buy the next one. ) And I never even bought anything for myself, just scrimped and saved free vbucks for my first battlepass. 3 People playing on and off (mostly on) for several years for under a tenner seems a pretty good deal. Though it does sometimes start to feel a bit like work.

Considering the number of last place people who stop just before the finish line to make everyone wait, I'm gonna go with mostly real people.
Or maybe they've just coded the bots to be griefers.

Yeah it’s harder to spot bots in a racing game but I’d assumed most of them are real players.
It’s a good little game/mode, I like how they vary the tracks with obstacles and boosts once you get to the higher ranks. And at those high ranks it almost feels like another rhythm game- how you take a turn isn’t as important as hitting every boost just right and using your own boosts at the perfect time to run out just as you cross the line.

I gave racing mode a go last night. Seems they've tweaked/polished quite a few things since early in the season, like shortening the timeout to only 30 seconds after the winner.
I didn't level up much though. Maybe it's easier to level up quick earlier on, when you're doing easier races and ranking up faster.
I hit Gold 1 rank and suddenly it became much harder to rank up. The tracks get much harder, and of course the opponents get much harder too. I'll go up 10% in one race, and then down 11% in the next one.
Some of the later tracks have almost no actual ground racing, everything is flipping between vertical and inverted surfaces. Which is fun, but stressful and very easy to make a single mistake and wipeout.
