I’ve only got my work laptop and I need to keep that clean. Oh well, I’ll keep an eye out for a console release of the older games. Apparently some of them were released on ps3. I have 1 and 2 on XSX, if that's any use?

No, sorry, thanks though. Needs to be ps4, ps5 or switch. No biggie. I’ll hopefully play them one day

Pretty sure I replayed one of them on an iPod touch! No iPhone or iPad?

I guess I could play them on my iPhone, didn't think of that. Kids have got fire tablets I could nick to play it on there if you can get it on google play.
I'll find a way.

Not on google play I don't think. Although there's probably a way to side load an emulator and use ScummVM if you were up for tinkering. Easier just to play the special additions on your iphone I'd have thought. The hint system is fairly handy if you're hoping to rattle through them reasonably swiftly, otherwise, the originals stand up and are basically the same experience just pixelier.

I’ll hopefully play them one day Apart from one broken puzzle* I really liked the XBox360 versions so was pretty disappointed they weren’t on PS4 when I swapped back to Sony * the melting cups puzzle in 1 didn’t work very well on the new radial inventory so switching back to the original graphics was the least stressful way to finish it

Ok, iPhone it is. £12.99 for all 5 seems like decent value.
Just checking though, is the tales series the same as the original games?

Ok, iPhone it is. £12.99 for all 5 seems like decent value. Just checking though, is the tales series the same as the original games? Return to MI is a 'direct sequel' to number 2 apparently so you probably want to try to get through those two. Not sure how the remainder relate although I believe I may have seen some references to number 3 in earlier previews. Tales (#5) is the episodic and/or 3d one which I never finished so unsure of that one - but not the same as the original games!

Oh, so the iPhone ones don’t actually help me then?

Depends what the iPhone ones contain. You are looking for Secret of Monkey Island and LeChuck's Revenge: Monkey Island 2. I assume it will be Special Edition for both.
If it is Tales of Monkey Island, which is the episodic TellTale game, then no that won't be what you would want. Bit confusing, as Tales contains five episodes and is the fifth and last game, so not too sure what you mean when you say it contains all 5.
Booted up the new one and it does have Guybrush's scrapbook on the main menu, which goes over the previous games. Actually goes right up to including Tales, so guess there might be some relevant bits there. Doesn't actually say much about the ending of 2 though. Odd, seeing as this one literally starts as the credit rolls on 2 (with a slightly adjusted scene).

I think I’ll just leave it for now!

Am I going to regret Hard Mode?

Doubtful, they’ve never been difficult.
Did notice there’s an option for a “writer’s cut” separately to that too, dunno if that means director’s commentary or just cut content though.

I wondered that too. Casual mode, from the name and the description, sounds like it will be basically just be the story with some very simple puzzles. Not reading the review linked above, but the Recommended and tag line is all I need to know. Edit - from my old place too www.rockpapershotgun.com/return-to-monkey-island-review

Yeah, I did think the mention to people "on the go" meant Switch gamers who might want to make progress in little bursts.

Reviews are looking good. Now the question for me is whether it can top Lair of the Clockwork God in fun factor and cleverness.
Don't have much time or money for games right now, so it has to go in the wishlist.

That was an awesome first hour: just what the doctor ordered. "Writer's Cut" suggests "more blather, less pacing".

The EG review is decent and very very long, no spoilers. Christian Donlan’s style works very well for a Monkey Island review.

Can’t wait to play it, but going back through 1 and 2 first. Because life is too short not to.

Enjoyed first couple of hours with it. Clearly playing up the nostalgia element a lot, with quite a few returning characters and nods. More than that, the structure seems to be highlighting it a lot too, so I expect nostalgia is going to feature as a theme throughout. Not sure how newcomers will fare, but hopefully there is enough there to keep them interested and not be too confused.*
Pleasantly surprised that it actually has the feel of a classic point and click adventure game in its gameplay. Puzzles seem to be structured as a chain, requiring multiple steps to complete. It's something that seems missing from a lot of modern attempts at the genre and it is welcome to see it here.
For those wondering, it plays great on the Steam Deck. The opening screen even says "press any button or tap". Don't know if all versions say that, but it seems to know I'm on a device with a touch screen.
* Also, although I said earlier that it takes place right after the credits of 2, that isn't quite right. Perhaps things happen later, but seems that some of the comments made to the press ahead of release were a bit of a misdirect.

Got a couple of hours in tonight. Hard mode because can always use the hint system if needed. On that note it seems ludicrous now that we played these pre-internet when if you got stuck that was pretty much tough luck. I distinctly remember asking friends about puzzles at school. If they couldn't help, well I'd just be resigned to yet another evening going around in circles making no progress. Pretty sure I got so stuck on MI2 that I had to wait secret years for gamefaqs to be a thing just to finish it!
Anyway, I have to say I was a bit worried by the first tutorial area. No real laughs and a very low key start after 30 years. Thankfully once past the opening credits it's great. The music and art work for me. I can mostly remember and enjoy the references though it's been over a decade since my last run through. I can feel the old point and click 'logic' circuits in the brain waking up.
Forced myself to stop and go to bed as I'd like to try and make it last.

Installed and fired up to read the recap storybook. Not in the right frame of mind to actually start it yet though. Still cold on the art style, but hopeful the music will pull me in.

In MI2, there is a location where Guybrush can call a helpline. The results are somewhat updated in the special edition remaster, worth checking out both versions.

I just like to pretend they thought of us few Deck players. There were helplines in the old days of point and click games (hence the gag in MI2). If you listen to the audio commentary during that bit, they actual comment that that is likely where most of the money from the games came from (I expect they are only half joking). I suspect there was an added incentive to make the puzzles obtuse and random in order to encourage people to call.

Broken Sword made a billion with just the goat puzzle.
