I'm not going to read this beyond the header because I haven't finished the story once yet, but it certainly sounds interesting:

Got to the point of the story where they start explaining everything yesterday. The missions just before felt very Mass Effect in terms of amping up tension, I'm not sure any game has done as good a scene of panic (because of how many NPCs you have in certain locations in Starfield).

I got quite into the space combat yesterday and this morning. There's a loading screen tip that says you can boost to evade an enemy lock-on, and might want to save your boosts for this - it made a huge difference in a battle I'd already lost twice. I picked up so many heavy Uranium fuel rods and control rods from the debris of Spacer ships that I had to jettison some to make room for Ship Parts - a good enhancement/mod would be allowing you to "consume" ship parts even if you don't have the cargo space for them. Also jettisoning cargo makes it blink out of existence rather than floating in space for you to collect again (say, after you've used the ship parts you just picked up) - that was a bit annoying. Also how did I manage to play 40 hours of this and not realise there that the ship combat includes VATS in space!

I also had my first sustained battles yesterday, in a mission where you have to reboot satellites across a system to re-connect the colonising families. I really, really enjoyed it, got to say.

Once you are locked on you can press R (PC) to go into real-time VATS to target ship systems, if you can disable engines you can dock and take the ship after murdering everyone inside.

Cheers, I'd read about the boarding mechanic but had no idea how it worked (and my fights so far have been a bit too frantic to consider it!). It's great to have that option.

Yes that’s what I was referring to - you need to invest a skill point into “Targeting Control Systems” in the Tech tree. Then it’s an option (X on Xbox Controller) when you lock onto a ship.

I've mostly focused on weapons and social (or whatever it's called, the one with persuasion etc.). But I've just saved up a couple of skill points, so I may well use one for that. Thanks.

The quest Operation Starseed sounds great, it has a load of earth historical figures in it.

I just re-read this and yeah, that mission is the same one I was doing when the ship combat finally clicked good rewards that the Spacers were hoarding too!

If you find a mission called Mantis, its worth doing as you got a much better ship than the standard ship and you you get good space suit (although has a bit less protection than the mark 1 suit we all nabbed in the HQ)
Had a play with the ship builder and messing with the first ship and its clunky to edit on console and the UI is not as good as the PC

I'm not sure it's great advice to do Mantis too early, just be aware you benefit from some levels in Security if you want to maximise that quest.
Does anyone know which skill governs weapon bash? I can't work out if it's boxing or duelling or neither. I'm now level 30 and have put zero points into weapons so far just because I couldn't really settle on any particular style of play, and never felt underpowered with my base damage.
However, after experimenting I've pretty much decided to abandon any pretence of stealth as on balance, I enjoy the combat most when playing like my Destiny Titan character.
i.e. take an Amp and then go full Leroy Jenkins into the hoard unloading a full clip as I close the distance before finishing off with a smack on the head before jetpacking away again. Some of the late game abilities also seem to fit with this approach.

Not too sure if the dueling skill counts for weapon bash too. Boxing definitely doesn't, as my one wasted skill point with 0 progress always reminds me...
For weapons I've just been piling my points into lasers and pistols for my trusty Ember. I'm using Sarah as a companion, so I've given her a laser pistol too as that seems to count towards progress.

I’ve got a good assortment of suppressed weapons for short, medium and long range, and a shotty that seems ridiculously overpowered for when they spot me. I also haven’t put any points into weapons yet but I’m tending towards ballistics rather than energy when I do.
I’m lv20 and so far it’s all gone into sneaking, security, some of the persuade/barter/commerce section and a bit of ship stuff. Every time I get close to doing something practical like carry weight or more damage, I find a different thing that seems essential for a quest or a locked door etc.

Oh Ffs.
Took a few freebies when clearing out the bank and some grass raised the alarm — looking at you, Sam Coe. Suddenly the Freestar Collective swarm in and arrest me. Just like the UC did!

Note to self, don't leave any valuables around askew.
I managed to grab 45 mins or so today after work and just randomly picked the quest mentioned above with the satellite repairing. Throwing myself into the ship combat was the best way to learn it.
Initially it just feels like you're not moving and tanking everything but it does start to feel better when you're boosting about and understanding the flight path of the enemy to keep them locked on.
Dropped all power from the grav, lowered the engines a bit and boosted missiles, shields and guns.
I about to go invade a system with a floatilla of farmer wingmen.

They don’t appear to play anyone else’s games so it’s entirely possible they’ll think they’ve hit on a hot new gaming concept- loading levels. Not sure if you mean this facetiously but I genuinely don't think they do. There's absolutely nothing here to suggest they've played anything other than Fallout 4. That Eurogamer review is bang on.

I've played over ten hours of this fucking thing now and I barely feel like I've started it. Still barely understand half of the mechanics. Haven't even had a space fight yet outside the tutorial one.

Mid conversation at Red Mile with two npc's and a creature aggros the entire bar, creature gets killed and the conversation continues with npc's miles away from each other and talking to one another through a series of walls.
About 20 minutes later mid conversation with a follower they get aggro'd and it soft locks the game.

I don't mind the Bethesda jank in general but it's this sort of stuff that I am starting to lose patience with a bit. Not so much the random interactions between NPCs and aliens (that's part of the fun) but the dialogue issues actively hurt the experience. It's been 17 years since Oblivion and I can't believe that they still haven't been able to figure out how to stop NPCs all shouting their canned dialogue at you at the exact same time! Or they speak with you from so far away you can't hear it. Sometimes it's quite critical information too. The fact that conversations can happen through walls is another that is surely not that hard to fix. Just looks completely ridiculous. HOW ARE THESE STILL ISSUES BETHESDA? 17 YEARS!

I find it odd that as soon as I take off my crew start conversations - the roar of engines drowns them out so haven't a clue what they are saying (not that it matters as they generally don't say interesting stuff). The Mantis quest was weird. One part is clearly a puzzle where you have to select the right letters to progress otherwise the turrets attack you. I just shot the turrets and ran to the door and opened it treading over all manner of letters built into the floor. NPC says "you did it!" - Um I shot the turrets, simple solution.

My favourite Bethesda bug is from Fallout 3(?), in which the NPC chatting with the player leaves the room, goes down a hall, goes up stairs, finds another set of stairs to come down, and then re-enters the room through another door and stops in front of the player just as his dialogue finishes.
That is peak gaming.
