So I rebought it, fixed the bug I was having (with people agroing on me for no reason) and I'm back to the grind of running back and forth and then back, and then forth, and then back and occasionally one last forth again.
Its lemon flavour busywork interspersed with some strawberry flavour busywork plus generous sprinkles of 100s&1000s busywork. Scanning plants and running to a distant structure or whatever when I'm in the middle of nowhere on a planet in the middle of nowhere. Which is one of the things I used to do all the time in every Bethesda game and invariably wound up fucking the flow of a broad swath of future missions beyond repair. Always fun to be sent somewhere to handle a group of folks who were probably meant to have branching dialogue trees, but I already rocked up, murdered everything that walked or crawled and stole their shoes 40 hours ago.
Seems to be an extremely consistent recurring theme with all their games. Explore, yes. Just don't be all that thorough, there's a good chap.

Seems to be a common issue with 49" monitors / 32:9 displays where the mouse cursor is out of sync with certain menus (choosing where to land on a planet, ship building, etc) by about the length of half a Mars bar (dont ask)
If you add the following to your StarfieldCustom.ini, it fixes the issue:
[Display] fWideAspectLimit=3.55556
[Interface] fSafeZoneXWide=840
The following is optional but recommended:
[Camera] fFPWorldFOV=100.0000 fFPWorldFOV=100.0000

Speaking of running back and forth and then back and forth some more, fucking hell the deep cover questline is horrific for that! Someone mentioned the lack of space radios in this. It's absolutely mind boggling that they haven't even attempted that. Just a little bit of rejigging of quests without the need for 8 bloody jumps would've made such a huge difference.

Yeah. Cyperpunk gets a lot of shit for the number of calls and messages you get on the phone in that game... but in Starfield each of those points of contact would require literally going to the person and having the conversation. It's beyond backwards.
Which is only more exasperating given that the quests without all the bollocks busy work are decent! Jettison the bullshit. Who needs it?!

I found a PDA that mentioned a secret base on a planet. Followed it to find the mantis and a new suit and ship. Initially I was excited for it but both are actually a step back over my existing ones. I'm guessing I should've done the quest sooner. Side note: ChonkyBoi now has over 1400 storage. I've dropped the lasers and added a 2nd autocannon and replaced the single existing missile launcher with twin upgrades on each side of the cockpit. It's turning into a death machine.

Does anyone know a good place to blow up a load of ships? Ideally without gaining a bounty or that kind of trouble. I want to spec more into shipbuilding but I need 15 or 20 ship kills to get to the next level (Class B piloting I think?).
I also need to practice disabling a ship’s engines - haven’t managed it once yet. Apparently EMP weapons are best, but even with conventional weapons you can do it in targeting mode as long as you keep letting the shield’s recharge.

Do the UC quest in New Atlantis. There's a combat sim as part of that that I believe you can keep repeating.
No idea about disabling stuff. I unlocked the advanced targeting skill, but haven't even bothered using it yet.

I find the space stuff almost impossible with the (near) starting ship. Every now and then I jump into a system, immediately get hailed by a couple of bounty hunters, and if I try to fight my shields are gone before I’ve even managed to get them up central on the screen so I can shoot them.

knighty Definitely do the mantis questline. I never struggled with combat in that ship, and more often than not they'll recognise the ship and try to run. Which was actually kind of annoying when I was trying to get more space kills.

The starter ship is absolute trash. I don't like spoilers but I googled pretty early on how to get a better ship as it was ruining my fun with ship combat, which I actually think is one of my favourite parts of the game now I've got a ship that isn't made out of poppadoms. Definitely recommend some boarding action, especially if you have some good shotguns.

If you want a great ship that you can get relatively quickly, the mantis is your friend and comes with bonus armour. If want a pretty much unstoppable ship, then the Star Eagle is the way to go but it will take a bit longer. In the interim, just buy/steal an upgrade from a landing pad.

Hmm, I've still got the Frontier (with a few upgraded weapons). Since we fast travel everywhere, I just keep the engine and grav drive on minimum and boost the shield and weapons to max.

I ran the UC training about three times and found getting to L4 piloting fairly easy that way.
I still just the Frontier but it's like Trigger's broom at this point.
In general I'd suggest getting the best reactor you possibly can. I have a C class one that outputs 29 points at present. Also only run two types of weapon. It seems better to have two that you can power up a lot rather than three you have to run compromised.

Yes, triggers broom!
That's why I binned off the lasers. Got double cannon and missiles now and can power them up for moar damage!

Top tips, thanks all, definitely checking out that UC mission later.
Speaking of good shotguns: Shotty, slug ammo, hair trigger, semi automatic. Absolutely rips through anything at close to mid range. Don’t be conned by fully automatic, you can do it a LOT faster yourself.

At the moment I've got lasers for stripping shields and missiles for targeted engine destroying. I did have 'automated rail guns' which sounded awesome and I had visions of Expanse-style epic space battles but I couldn't figure out how to actually activate them. Maybe needs a skill that I haven't unlocked. They had to go back to the vendor for now.
I recently upgraded my missiles to best available and think they might actually be too powerful for the point I'm at. Every time I try to disable the engines with them before boarding, I end up prematurely destroying the entire ship instead. Lowering the power seems to only reduce reload/firing rate rather than actually lessen how hard they hit.

My setup at the moment is six particle beams, two particle beam turrets and two EM emitters. Switch power between the last two depending on whether I'm capturing the target or not. ship show off: i.imgur.com/UwAdbN4.jpg

I miss the more interesting perks from the fallout games, in this its a lot do more extra 10% damage with lasers or shotguns (then you have to grind a little task to get to the next level with the next skill point)
I hope they do Starfield 2.0 like they did with cyberpunk but I know that will never happen

People could probably mod in a better leveling system. But yeah, the "+6% to frost damage, +2% to reload speed" bullshit irritates me no matter what game it's in.

Other mods I’m fervently willing into existence*
- Better looking NPCs / companions - Rich merchants - Improved combat AI - Enemy death animations - Better star map - City maps! - Unread Books Glow (my personal hidden gem)
*some of these may already exist on PC. Console mods WHEN Bethesda please?!

You can apparently use a console command to set the amount you can store in containers. Open the console, click on the container, and type the command to set it to a value of 5000 instead of whatever piss poor value it currently is, so the warehouse containers you can build at outposts would actually have a decent amount of storage, and not seem like they are full when all you've got in there is a dozen spools of wire.

One of these days I'll remember you can dump crap on your ship if you're within 250 meters. You don't need to go to the cabin every time. Not today though.

This is particularly useful if you ever want to smuggle a certain fishy contraband out of a certain brightly lit city. Like, before you pass through the scanners they’ve set up to prevent exactly that.
