Ha, yes, very well done. There’s a slightly ludicrous suspension of disbelief needed to accommodate the here and there busywork and the “storyline”.

Braking engines apparently have no difficulty working when surrounded on all sides by other ship components.

Heh, last night I built a ship from scratch. It was really satisfying going “select all —> delete” and starting from nothing. I was only doing it to complete the “add unique ship parts” skill quest and unlock the next level of Ship Design, so I basically went through the components one by one, bought the cheapest, and fit it together wherever it would go. Ended up needing 2 extra engines and 2 struts so the key bits weren’t overlapping.
It was an absolute monstrosity.

Went away for a long weekend and had no urge to resume since coming back. I've now decided to park this until the HDR and DLSS patches are out. Performance is fine on my 5600 and 3080 but I can't help but feel it'll be substantially better once they finally do their 'major' patch. I also have two broken quests that are both asking me to mine rocks I can't see and can't highlight.

For some reason I'm now running around Mars surface in my street gear without issue. Everyone else is still having to wear a space suit.

See, me, Sam, and the moon, we've got this little understanding when it comes to little matters like oxygen and freezing to death... Thought they might have fixed that by now.

I’m settling into NG+ nicely now- as expected, it’s great being able to mod weapons, equipment and ships from the very start (although a bit annoying having to buy or gather resources all over again). I’ve switched companions and I’m trying to, er, romance the other one, but she doesn’t seem interested yet - maybe she knows something like how I was hitched to Andreja in the last multiverse Also it’s baffling how they did an in-universe justification for New Game plus but didn’t think to remove the tutorials from the menus- I’m on 150 hours, pretty sure I know how to highlight a different quest by now.

It's taken me ages to realise that Commander Ikande of the UC Sys Def is voiced by Jaavik from Mass Effect 3.

You mean Ike Amadi spoke lines for Javik that were then used in Starfield?

I’m done, other games have grabbed me now. Yeah, I left it weeks ago and haven’t felt the urge to go back. I bought Skyrim four times FFS. What a pity.

Don't play much Xbox so decided to buy this at launch on disc, my first Xbox physical game in about 8 years or so.
10 hours played and fucking hell, has none of the magic of Skyrim or Oblivion. Fallout 4 was pretty poor so that's over a decade since a great game from Bethesda. Just so fucking boring.
Traded it in and made quite the loss. Lesson learned, £12.99 a month for Gamepass and use it as a test in future.

Just finishing up with the Ryujin questline which has been dire, then it's about wrapping up the main quest and then goodbye.
It's got enough going for it to say I've enjoyed it, but genuinely also probably the biggest disappointment in terms of expectations vs reality, even more so than Cyberpunk.

Yeah I think that's where I'm at with it too. I've absolutely had my money's worth out of it already, really enjoyed it, and yet I can't help but feel slightly disappointed that it hasn't grabbed me for longer. I really loved the first 50hrs or so, but there just hasn't been the sense of progression or narrative pull in the mid to late game that I had hoped for. I need more of a reason to want to explore space or set up settlements than they are giving me.
I'm questioning whether I'll ever get another 10/10, epic, immersive, first-person RPG/exploration experience. Bethesda was pretty much my only hope. Unless I'm mistaken, no other large RPG dev seems keen to even try and do something similar to their formula. I guess ES6 will come along in around 2030...

There's going to be an Outer Worlds 2, will be interesting to see if it learns the lessons of the first game (and also shows how hard it is to get this kind of game right). What Starfield is, I like - playing through Cyberpunk a second time it really does hit home how little actual choice you get in that game (which is the point of it, granted).

I enjoyed Cyberpunk a fair bit but it's a very different style of game as you say.
It's mostly a case of sweeping icons off a map and plays more like GTA where you follow someone else's predefined story like an interactive movie, rather than create your own 'hero' and set out into the world. Of course it's all illusion but at their best Bethesda games make it feel like it's your story. Starfield has that to some degree it's just that as has been said many times the urge to explore and discover has been diminished in the new design. The illusion has been broken faster as a result.
I felt a lot of apathy to Outer Worlds and stopped after 6hrs or so, so don't have much hope for the sequel but perhaps they'll surprise.

I'm in that minority that really enjoyed Outer Worlds. It's one of the handful of RPGs that I've played to completion.
I think the economic reality of game development is that the size of the world and the scope of options have to be limited to give the player the most engaging and interesting experience. Anything beyond that you have to rely on proceedually generated content (No Man's Sky) or cookie cutter quest templates (Starfield), both of which get uninteresting fairly quickly for similar reasons.
Am also on my 2nd playthrough of Cyberpunk and it's even more obvious how linear it is this time round than the first. But it's great.

To add to that though, it'll be interesting to see if generative AI can fill that gap.

Starfield lacks the magic of Skyrim (both figuratively and literally), and the "Wild Wasteland" weirdness of Fallout, but it's still fun enough. And I can't wait to see what mods can do with it a year from now.

That's a really good point actually. I can absolutely see how AI might provide the tools to allow developers to create bigger games on smaller budgets.

Part of the problem is the amount of re-used content. They should have axed half of the stars/planets and made the remaining ones more varied. I can just barely stretch my suspension of disbelief when it comes to UC outposts, as they might conceivably all have the same design, just about. But after the third abandoned cryo lab that's done. I stumbled upon the first one, there was a quest item in the second one and I just ignored the third one. In the case of the first Paradiso quest There's a ship that has travelled for 200 years being cut off from humanity and they still have an Eggmund digital assistant in their ship? And a compatible docking ring? It feels like they should have made the game at the edge of the Settled Systems. Have some interesting storylines about the settled planets/moons and have a ton more that are waiting to be explored.

Not feeling any urge to play this at all really. Generally seems most people have cooled on it, even if they were excited in the beginning, It also looks really grey

Exactly how many plants have Muybridge abandoned anyway? Do the pirates stand in the same place in every one of them because of strict head office franchise rules around the customers Muybridge experience? Why do all the civilian outpost vendors in an area share the same bank account? Why is everything in the universe entirely bulletproof except armour? Why can't I take the supressor off one rifle and put it on another identical rifle?

So Pete Hines is retiring.
It's going to be the best, most expansive retirement ever. Infinite possibilities, meaningful choices, thousands of unique interactions. He'll be able to be whoever he wants to be, do whatever he wants to do. Dozens of years in the making.
