Lego Marvel Superheroes 2.
Playing it alongside my six year old and I think it's fair to say the formula is testing my patience.
They still can't seem to release these bug free either you'd think after about 50 of the things they'd be able to iron out the issues.

Holy fuck, is the frame rate smooth. It feels amazing to maneuever through.
It feels weird to say, but the closest thing I can compare it to is Everspace 1? I mean in terms of multiple randomised stages, where the loadout you pick up can make the difference between completing a run with an insanely high health level, or having the shit knocked out of you early on.
Some of the new stuff added like Sentry turrets are quite welcome, plus the achievements are now available. The new Hornet enemies, like their real life brethren, are cunts.

Almost almost done with rise of tomb raider.
Got distracted by those challenges but can't find one last poster in the last city so I'm giving up on that challenge.
Still have to do manor dlc.

Yeah, we got bugged out on Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 this weekend. It's a lot less buggy than Years 1-4 was though. We have about 8 of them unplayed that I picked up in various freebies or bundles, but we're a bit burned out on them for now.

Alone in the Dark and Callisto Protocol DLC
Although what happens is I put one of them on and start to fall asleep, juddering awake when I get attacked by something. Until then my character seems to just walk around in circles for a bit.
I think I'm too tired to play stuff just now but dammit I'm going to anyway.

Rise of the Ronin continues to baffle the hell out of me.
I'm having a good time with it... But I'm acutely aware that much of this is because I'm in a bit of a funk at the moment, and the endless checklist drudgery is keeping my mind occupied.
Combat is excellent... But it's nowhere near as nuanced as Team Ninja's usual output, and enemy variety is sorely lacking compared to that of their previous titles.
Stealth is an entertaining alternative to combat... But mainly because the enemy AI is so utterly brainless that they don't notice anything that's going on more than three feet away, which can be pretty amusing.
Gliding about the place is always fun, and I even have a soft spot for Goofy the Horse... But there's plenty of jank to be found, which takes one out of the experience at regular intervals.
The dialogue and acting are "better" than they were in Stranger of Paradise... But this game is nowhere near as entertaining, and Team Ninja doesn't have the chops to pull off the sincerity and gravitas for which they're aiming.

Just bought 2 games I have been after, both on sale on xbox/ps5. "Banishers of New Eden" £34, actually free as I used Gamepass credit and on Sony "Nobody wants to die", £15 as it is the "bargain of the day" on PlayStation storefront. Look forward to starting both in the coming weeks 👌

The Messenger (PS4/5) - £3.19 till tomorrow 2D retro platformer, enjoying it a lot. Fairly minimal skill tree, cool chip tunes, easy bosses, humorous shop guy etc.. Saboteur meets Bionic Commando, perhaps.

Sometimes games are better than the sum of there parts, and fulfill needs we didn’t realise and just click for whatever reason. It’s nice to be pleasantly surprised by a game or find one that takes you away from everything and transports you to another place. Can’t beat a good 7/10 game, often because they have some personality amongst their quirks.

Took the time to try a few small games off of itch.io. The Long Way, Ex Amante, a few others.
"Memory of a broken dimension" was probably the one most worth mentioning. It starts out in a DOS screen and I didn't know how to get out of there at first. The "Help" command showed some options that actually did do something.
After that it's a fairly confusing shredded visual representation of something that is fairly insubstantial and there is distortion all over the screen. I didn't really get how it works, but it's apparently about reconstructing scans somehow.
I didn't find any way to quit the game other than Alt F4. It says that "There is no exit" and that "There is no escape".

Wizzard_Ook That was a great post - thanks for making it. I don't know how much of the fun I'm having in Rise of the Ronin stems from some sort of 'X' factor, versus how much is me being Sergeant Mopey-Pants right now, but there's *something* here that I'm enjoying. Most open-world games bore me to absolute tears these days, and normally I'd be all, "Oh, there's another cat 327 metres away? I don't care! That cat can eat a bag of dicks!"... But somehow, Ronin has me being, like, "C'mon, Goofy - let us hie in the direction of that wayward feline!"

Thanks to your post I just have! £3.59 on Switch, so 40p Nintendo Tax. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it, but Ninja Gaiden on NES has scarred me. I beat that game, but it probably aged me by 15 years.

I’ve also picked up Penny’s Big Breakaway. Although I’m not the biggest fan of Sonic Mania, I can appreciate they are a talented team that at least understood what makes for a decent platformer.

You know what's annoying? Playing a game for 6 hours and then wondering how far through it you are. Checking HowLongToBeat and seeing that it takes 6 hours. Then checking a walkthrough and realizing you're only on level 8 out of 16! *grumps* If you like action platformers in any way, get it! Seriously. Still, plodding about in the wasteland on FO76.
It's ok and nothing special (or s.p.e.c.i.a.l?), but that core combat/loot/lockpick/whatsoverthere? still just works so well.
Reckon I have a good few weeks worth of story/'splorin' to keep me occupied in it before i lose interest.

Penny’s Big Breakaway
Instant regret with this purchase. I loved the look of the game and really enjoyed Digital Foundry’s deep dive into the game, but my experience has been pretty rough.
Firstly, the controls are not great. Not even on paper. The pro mode makes using the yo-yo more precise (by aiming with the right analog stick), but it’s actually harder to point two analog sticks in exactly the same direction, meaning I’m frequently swinging at angles are slightly different to when I am jumping, so momentum is often lost.
Then you’ve got the fact that dash is assigned to both front shoulder buttons and Jump to the back shoulder buttons, which is straight forward on paper, but really confusing in action. Why not have one input on the left side and the other on the right? Those buttons are also mapped to the regular face buttons, but that makes using the right analog stick for the yo-yo tricky. There’s also a button for the yo-yo, but it’s tricky to spin and direct your character at the same time. And then you start mixing the face buttons, shoulder buttons and the stick, but somehow end up pulling off the wrong actions because you hit the back shoulder buttons instead of the front one, and for some reason your brain is trying to use the left and right shoulder buttons, even though that makes no difference to input.
And then! And then! There is a brief window in which when you’ve performed one action, you can’t immediately perform a second one. Like you can dash, but then you have to wait for a brief moment before rolling. The same applies if you’re swinging from your yo-yo, but you want to land into a roll. If you hit that button too soon the roll just won’t happen and all momentum is lost. It’s as if there is a very short window after which an animation ends that doesn’t expect an input, so chaining moves together requires some tricky timing. I don’t know if it’s a design choice, a bug or a performance issue relating the the Switxh, but I find it borderline criminal.
I’ve put about 2 hours into this so far, so it’s still kinda early days, but bad controls are literally my biggest pet peeve in games and all I’ve done is wrestle them. I’ve not bounced off a game this hard since Arcade Paradise, but in that game’s defence I think it just exposed some kind of deeply buried work-related anxiety I’ve got. This game fees like it’s trying to teach me to walk all over again.
There is a simple control option available that removes the stick and shoulder button inputs, so I will give that a go, but it isn’t going to resolve that final issue where inputs just won’t register if you’re too quick.
One final moan. I like the visuals. It looks very slick on Switch too, but the solid colours actually make it quite tricky to judge distance. I’ll get a feel for it eventually, and the game is generally quite forgiving, but I do occasionally struggle with floating platforms and in moments of chaos I also seem to lose sight of Penny on the screen.
I’ve got to give it another chance, but it feels like it’s be of those games that will just annoy me the more I try with it.

I'm enjoying Shadwen quite a bit now. Like a lot of stealth games, when it all flows together and you ghost past a bunch of guards in a row using cool moves and timing, you feel pretty cool. This gives you lots of tools to do that, but it took me a while to learn how to avoid most of the jank and be more of a badass ninja and less of a fool hanging weirdly from a beam. Maybe you just internalize the jank as part of how the game is played. It seems like you can play either non-violently or violently, and if you play violently then if the little kid you're escorting finds the bodies then that affects the ending, which is pretty neat. I'm kinda committed to a pacifist playthrough now, though it sometimes feels like a shame because a lot of the environments are setup for things like dropping barrels on the Thief-like guards' heads, and most of the toys you can build are things like traps so I can't use them. I may go back and do a full violent run of the last level after I finish, so I can play with them all.

NBA 2k25
This year I decided to pre-order a game that I know full well will a) be on GamePass at some point within the year, and be down to 6.99 come June next year. But hey, as part of the preorder thing, I got the NBA league pass so I can watch live games. It’s sort of a good deal. Sort of.
Anyway, it plays really well. Animations are smooth, shooting is rewarding and there’s a tonne of game modes for playing offline seasons/tournaments etc if the online competition is not to your liking.
I love tinkering with the player creator and putting time into fleshing out a build but my god 2K are horrendous when it comes to the micro-transactions. There are people playing online with builds that are in the high 90s already, which (by my calculations) means they’ve dropped another £50-100 on the in-game currency. Wow.
Despite that, I think I might be slightly addicted to the grind already after 2 days.

The Callisto Protocol (PS5)
Thought I'd give this a go based on some recent mentions of it here. It's... alright so far. Not hating the combat, but I have found myself turning on a few of the accessibility options, such as the one that automatically does the QTEs for you. Because it's 2024 and fuck QTEs, honestly. When can I upgrade my inventory??

Edit: third section I should say. Think I'm way more than 2 hours in though. Been exploring all the side areas.

dfunked How are you getting on with Unicorn Overlord's story/characters? Do they have much personality, reason to care about them? Fire Emblem Engage's characters are very anime and silly but still charming and likeable in their own weird ways. Mothering characters through these games is part of the appeal for me, so I'd be less inclined to want to invest time into developing characters I didn't care about Speaking of which, I'm about 12 chapters into Engage now and enjoying it a lot. The Emblem pairing stuff is well implemented, useful and doesn't feel OP. The non-combat stuff is probably even more significant than it was in Three Houses, complete with minigames, fishing, cooking, bonding activities, ring polishing. I don't really mind the downtime as you get used to the routine of it and I enjoy a bit of management. My complaint with it is the need for loading times between so many of the areas that it's a pain to get around to the various activities, especially when so many of them are rooms with a single purpose Story is anime bobbins (not as bad as Fates, but a step back from Three Houses so far), main character isn't very cool but it's entertaining and the characters are fun- there's only about 3 I've sidelined so far never to be used due to not liking them Weapons triangle is back, so that's cool Had a little go at Advance Wars 1+2 Bootcamp and it seems ace so far. Looks like they've done a bang up job updating it. The combat animations are still very charming. Shame it didn't sell well and the series will likely remain dormant. I tried Wargroove ages ago and it just didn't have the same appeal and felt overly fussy to play

The characters in Unicorn Overlord were a bunch of cliches for me. Not terrible, but I honestly couldn't tell you a single thing I remember about them. And I only finished the game a few months ago.
But from a tactics standpoint, it was great. And if that part of it is good enough (see also: Fire Emblem Engage) I can overlook the rote storytelling.

Story was OK at first, but yeah after a while starts to grate and I find my mind wandering or even just skipping cutscenes.
Not helped by there being far too many characters to keep track of...
Great game aside from that, but it's probably dropping down to more of a 7.5-8/10 for me than the nailed on 9/10 it felt like at the beginning.
