Balatro takes poker and swirls it together with roguelite elements. (I understood it and didn't know how to play poker.) It's been compared to Slay the Spire and, a few times, I've seen people say it's one of the best games they've ever played. It's available on all platforms. I bought it on Xbox for £12. It's very good, especially for the price.
It's on Xbox Series, PS5, Switch, Steam and Xbox One and PS4 (!)

That trailer is very enticing.
I think this would be a perfect handheld game rather than something I’d sit at a desktop console with though.
When’s Switch 2 out again?

Like I said in the what are you playing thread, it's a GotY contender for me already. You don't need to know anything about poker really apart from which particular hands are better (which the game shows you if you click on run info)
Outside of that it's just trying get your chips and multiplier as high as possible via the use of jokers and consumable cards. It really is excellent and I've had to stop myself from playing it a few times as I know I'd still be having "one more quick run" at 1am.
And yeah, it's on all consoles including Switch. I just assumed it was a Steam only thing at first so grabbed it there (admittedly cheaply)

I haven't got round to the full game yet, but the demo was great, works flawlessly on Steam Deck.

GOTY easily, definitely needs it's own thread.
I'm 12+ hours in, completed one run so far with the green deck. I realise that I need to get more money with the other decks and maybe leave the celestial cards alone and look for more ways to get multis and chips instead. Each new deck gives you a whole new challenge.

Caved in and double dipped on Switch. I've discarded far too many bloody cards due to the button layout! Fluffed my first almost win thanks to that...
Love that you can just quit to the menu at any point and pick it up later.

I'm not having much joy with the red deck... I had a really nice synergy for one run that had a joker copying another joker that had a 2 in 4 chance of upgrading the played hand thanks to the joker that doubles your odds, but that eventually ran out of steam with no viable jokers appearing to boost it further. But after that I've really struggled to even get to that point again.
I might have to try a different deck just to get out of the rut.

Must've tried it 20 times across steam and switch now.
Think I've only seen the joker that improves your odds for that kind of thing once so far. My luck is clearly a bit rubbish...

Yeah, it's probably my one and only complaint about the game. RNG could do with a bit of bad luck protection.
Had a ridiculous run with space joker and my most played hand only being level 3 or something 6 antes later.

Holy hell is this thing addicted. Apparently I’ve done six hours in it today. SIX! It’s a school day too?!
I can only get to Ante 6. Couldn’t get close to the 40,000 necessary. Had to force myself not to go right back in for another go. Unbelievable.

I have a self imposed ban on playing games after 10pm as it really messes with my sleep.
That's not going so well tonight... My mind will probably still be whirring at 3am. Had to force myself not to start "one more quick run"™
Great game just now with four jokers that grew as I played, with some decent synergy between the first three.
Play exactly 4 cards to get a permanent boost to chips.
Play two pairs to get a permanent increase to multiplier
Add number of times you've played hand to multiplier.
Extra x0.25 for every extra card in your deck
Then I got the coupons for extra shop slots, cards cost less and regular cards can be bought in the shop and the multiplier went through the roof. $1 for every card I added.
Dropped another x mult joker in and it got even more ludicrous.
This game is pure crack!

Funny enough I broke my same rule last night and was up until 11.40pm without realising it.
I'm trying to resist looking up any guides as I don't want to spoil the exploration of it all, but I might have to soon!

Yeah, some stuff just makes no sense to me. With steel cards for example it feels like I'm missing an obvious utility. They always trigger way too early to make a big impact. They only seem useful for hands with decent multipliers like straight flushes.
Other ones like stone cards can be amazing if you're just focussing on high card scoring.

Managed to beat a run for the first time! Had a few jokers that seemed to work together by adding multipliers for pairs, upgrading hands, and x multipliers for jokers/extra cards & duplicating cards. I think I ended up with level 25 for two pair hands.
Reread that and doesn't make much sense! Work productivity has slipped. Great game!
When it continued into endless I managed another round or so before my multipliers became worthless vs. the massive blinds.

I made the mistake of starting a run on my lunch break and now it's all I can think about.
Just unlocked a joker that upgrades the first hand you discard every round. That sounds like it could make a high card build pretty cracked... Just discard any old card and then carry on.

Weirdly I've had some good runs using high cards, I need to get more stone cards to see if that is actually a viable strategy.

Not a fan of the tutorial so far.
Stupid as the clampdown is, all the devs had to do (and this is absolutely not a slight on them) is use something other than the $ as currency. Or bells because then Nintendo would get pissy but you hopefully get the point.

I pretty much only bother with it when I'm swimming in money and it's an individual purchase in the shop, or there's nothing else in a pack that interests me. Think they tweaked it to 1/4 instead of 1/5 recently too, but it still seems utterly fucked. Glass cards or the banana joker clearly don't have the same odds despite having the same odds. |
