The Apple App Store really is shocking sometimes. I saw “preorder on the App Store” in that trailer and searched for Balatro… finally found it about 15 results down, hidden after a load of obvious clones and shovelware.
(It’s £9.99 to preorder by the way)

Hey all I am struggling to beat the game on black level difficulty. I usually use the checkered deck for easy flushes but seem to hit an ante wall towards the end. Any advice on a better deck to use maybe?

September 17, 2024 - the day Balatro finally comes to retail.
Uly's copy arrives in the post soon after lunchtime.
Installation takes around one minute.
"I'll just mess about with it for a bit, to get a handle on how it all works, then I'll fire up Wild Hearts. Those kemono aren't going to hunt themselves!"
"Eh, one more run."
"One more."
"That one didn't count."
"Last one, for realsies this time."
"Okay, time to play some Wild Hearts. Wonder why I'm so hungry?"
"Wait - it's WHAT time?!"
Yeah, this game's a bit good.

I've picked this up on Switch again recently and just idly trying to get close to completing the collection. It's such a time vampire of a game... Think I'll play it safe and just not install the Android version when it comes out.

It still seems nutty to me that this game is rated 18 because it contains "simulated gambling", while EA's latest lootbox-riddled sports games are rated 3.
Nice work, PEGI! Way to see the wood for the trees!

When you're just trying to learn the game, unlock jokers, and win your first run, is there a "best" deck to use?

Blue is the best of the early ones because extra hands are incredibly valuable. Green is also pretty good as there's no downsides to spending money.
Checkered is probably the best for just casually figuring stuff out but you have to win with the black deck to get it, and black deck sucks ass.

Not played for a while, so can't remember which deck is which, but best advise I can give to someone just starting out is to make sure you get jokers that multiply the multiplier. Don't be like me and totally fail to realise how good even ones that just multiply it by 1.something are.

Had my first round on mobile. It's the Balatro we know and worship.
My qualm is that there is no portrait mode. I find it so much more comfortable for playing games, especially on a commute. Shame he hasn't rejigged it for that.
Tied into this, the screen layout is almost identical to the PC version. Which means Play and Discard are very central on the screen and a further stretch than I'd like for my fingers. Can already slightly feel the RSI after a 40 mins run.
He's added some nice mobile functionality like dragging cards into hover zones to pay for them. Would've liked to have seen Play and Discard buttons closer to the left/right edges of the screen.
No save transfer btw.

Downloaded on Friday (Android). Partner was away Saturday so I thought I would stay in bed with a coffee and have a few sessions. I got out of bed at 3pm having played for 5 hours without realising - by the end of the day I'd played 9hrs 38mins!
Addictive doesn't seem to be a strong enough word for this.
Managed one full run.
I seem to favour chasing runs built around Flushes or Straights. I'm not using Tarot or Spectral cards nearly enough, and really just focussing on Planets and Jokers, so clearly have a lot to learn.
I think this game just killed my Marvel Snap addiction.

Flush and Straight runs are what I naturally fall into as well.
Is fun doing High Card/Pair builds too.
Never really managed to pull off 3- or 4-of-a-kind builds though. Find they take a bit too much early game construction to proliferate enough duplicate cards to pull off the hands.

Flush + checkered deck was all I played for ages. If you can get your hand increased to 9 cards then it's impossible not to get one (well, apart from boss blinds), so you can just power through the early antes.
Plasma deck is quite fun too. Turns scoring on its head.
God damnit... Now I want to have a "quick game"...
High card is probably my favourite to play on any deck, especially fun when you get the all cards count in scoring joker.

It's dark, the girlfriend quietly snores, the dogs loudly snore, the only light in the room is balatro on a small screen.

I was gunning to unlock the 100.000.000 chips scored in a single hand for a while now and then I went and got one hand with 69 billion...Unlocked that last pesky joker.
Anaglyph deck FTW...

Yeah this is addictive! Just finished my first run - almost exclusively straights with the joker that lets you hop numbers, another that multiplied for every face card and a 3rd that considered every card as face.
I just ploughed through the red deck.

Despite having an additional hand, I can't ever seem to clear blue deck. Skill issue I guess. Is it best to find some hands to upgrade early on and just commit or spread out as much as you can?

Early on you mostly want jokers that increase chips or +mult. The ideal is to get something that scales (like, say, Square Joker), so you can make it more powerful and it can continue to be useful. But even stuff like Popcorn or Ice Cream can keep you going for a few antes on their own.
After that you want a good balance of chips and +mult, and then start prioritising xmult jokers. You don't have to get too crazy to finish on the lower stakes, but that's basically what you need to win.

Black deck was one of the hardest for me, you need a super good early start with that one in order to make enough progress to use it's ability.

Ok so I've literally just won there now lol. Hanging Chad, Blueprint, Photograph, Gluttonous Joker and Sock and Buskin, leaning all in to building a deck with a lot of enhanced Club cards. Finished up on the last level with a score of over 6 mil. God this games good

Had a lovely one recently with Vampire, then the joker that makes face cards into gold cards and Pareidolia turning all cards into face cards, every 5 card hand added x0.5 multi to Vampire.
