Yeah I played Wrath on console recently and... it's a bit shit. I knew what I was letting myself in for going in as I heard how different the console version was with the different engine etc.
I mean, a bit shit is a harsh, it's alright. I didn't really find the urge to continue after a couple of levels though.

I guess it was easier/cheaper/faster to move it to Unity than port Darkplaces. Slipgate Ironworks seem to have a poor reputation generally. Not sure I've actually played anything by them but I remember Civvie11 breaking character in a video to complain about them, which is the only time I've seen him do that

Darkplaces and by extension the version modified for use in Wrath is GPL so that’s probably the issue they didn’t want to work around.

I think KillPixel were the lead on Wrath, rather than Slipgate. Probably why the game was largely pretty good. Unlike Graven and Phantom Fury which are dogshit.
Ah, I just looked. Yeah, they did the console port of Wrath. That explains a lot.
Reading up on the bugs in the console port sounds ridiculous. Basic shit like triggers not working. IDK how you can struggle with that in Unity.

Have read a few user reviews of Wrath that complained about the level design in Wrath Episode 2 onward, but not sure I agree at all. The levels so far have been a little less sprawling-for-the-sake-of-it, tighter and have bigger combat encounters. Having the two new weapons spices up the combat options a lot, especially a railgun for the chunkier distance targets that were very awkward before. And a couple of new enemies (though variety is still a bit lacking).
Enjoying it.
Though it does feel as though the base pistol should have been a touch stronger. Ammo is relatively limited compared to your Quakes and Dooms, which means you often want to be popping away at the smaller guys with the pistol instead of your stronger weapons. Can be a bit of a momentum killer popping away a few of them at ranges they can't hurt you.

Wrath episode 2 down - first 3 levels were excellent, last 2 were too bloody long for their own good. The longer levels don't really escalate enough - they just reach a certain point of combat intensity and bubble along until one last fight.
I think in going for the Arcane Dimensions level of complexity they've missed that what makes a lot of AD work is the fact your weapons start from scratch each level and you can build different feels of encounters by ensuring the player doesn't have x/y/z gun.
In this you're always starting with everything you've found, and it's a bit silly when each level starts you against the lowest tier enemies as if you don't.

It's pretty good. It's just missing a certain spice to be in the upper echelon of retro shooters.

I actually was quite enjoying it. I think I just got sidetracked, as usual. I'm now wondering if the Switch version is on par with the PS version (as in, as inferior to the PC version but not any worse) as it's on sale there and the Switch is becoming my go-to for retro FPS's.

Which retro FPSs are you playing on Switch?
I've only got Doom as I don't really trust them to run that well. Ion Fury is only 30fps and has some major drops from what I read. Dusk seems well done

So far, Quake 1&2, Doom (1,2,3 & 64), Duke, Dark Forces, Powerslave, Prodeus, Chasm and possibly one or two others.
Edit: Strife as well.
Oh shit. Dusk is on sale.

I’m contemplating Dusk but something about it doesn’t appeal. It almost looks TOO basic.

I've only heard good things about it. My reticence is that it's usually by people referencing Blood, which I've never been able to get into
It's got strong horror vibes though so I can see it being your thing

I’d love Blood to get a console release.

I could never get into Blood, despite trying several times and liking pretty much every other Monolith shooter. (except Blood 2)

I really liked it but never saw anything after the first episode. That was either because it was bloody hard or I only had the shareware episode. I have a feeling it's the latter, but the former is also true.

We were discussing the console ports of Wrath on the last page actually - apparently the console versions are a hard avoid as they got the studio behind some very poor games to convert the game to Unity because the Darkplaces engine license restricted a console release, and they're broken as shit.

Yeah it was the PS5 version I was playing it on originally and I think that was a factor in me deciding to bin it off.
That said I still had some fun with it despite it being a below par port.
I'll fire it up on PS soon and see what I think and if I have the urge to continue. you wouldn't have thought it possible to balls something like this up, but there you go.
I also have a disc copy of Graven I bought on a whim when it launched kicking about and haven't really tried that yet, and I gather that isn't great either.

I’m contemplating Dusk but something about it doesn’t appeal. It almost looks TOO basic. Dusk starts very basic but the architecture and combat design becomes very much not by episode 2. The PC version (possibly console) also has the free Dusk HD addon that gives everything a lick of paint. The game in general is surprisingly very atmospheric and foreboding in a way most fail to achieve.
My top throwback shooters are probably:
1. Ultrakill 2. Turbo Overkill 3. Selaco
4. Dusk 5. Amid Evil
Blood is worth playing imo, worth knowing that enemy accuracy is reduced when you crouch. The difficulty is also absolutely brutal and I wouldn't recommend above the middle for a first playthrough.
Ultrakill is probably an all time top 5 video game to be honest, and it's not even finished yet. When it hits full release I guarantee it's going to set review aggregators on fire.

Thanks for that. Hmm. Yeah. Very tempted by Dusk now.
Just a shame a lot of your list aren't on console (yet at least).
I didn't know that about the crouching in Blood!

You could give Nightmare Reaper a look as well, that's on console. I found it a bit visually offputting at times with the bloom etc, but it's very well made. Essentially procedurally generated levels with randomised, borderlands-style loot, you pick one weapon at the end of each level to bring forward into the next (eventually more). The affixes get pretty crazy, and many of the base weapons are properly bonkers too. Civvie has a good vid on it.
Oh and it'd be amiss not to mention that Roboquest is getting a PS5 release next year. I forgot it in my list above, but it's probably one of the best roguelikes I've ever played and stands shoulder to shoulder with Dead Cells and Enter the Gungeon for me.

I think it's the art style of Nightmare Reaper that puts me off tbh. It looks like a minecraft mod.

Yeah, it's ugly. The bloom in particular, though I think on PC you can turn it off.
Fucking great fun though.

Blood is suppose to get easier after the first episode as there aren't as many cultists I think. I knew about the crouching thing but it still annoyed me. I don't like having to save scum my way through a game. I just start wondering if I'm even achieving anything just brute forcing my way through something like that
Visually I find it a bit brown/grey as well. I should love it as a retro horror themed FPS but it's never clicked. By the end of the first episode, I just can't be arsed anymore
Selaco looks mint. Not fussed about Ultrakill or Turbo Overkill as I think they skew more towards modern shooter with retro visuals from what I've seen

When you say Blood, do you mean the old one called One unit blood, or something like that? Killing undead with dynamite and stuff? I loved that but it kept crashing on me.
Is there a stable version of it now?

I think that's just the official modern port. Should be able to run the files in something else in a similar way you do with Doom and GZ Doom - don't know which are best though or what I used
Does sound like the right game (Blood)

Ultrakill becomes very much its own thing as it goes by. It initially wears the Quake-meets-DMC thing on its sleeve and just utterly transcends it by the half way point of the game. It's genuinely extraordinary in terms of the set pieces and combat depth it has. To me it's what Doom Eternal was *trying* to do, it's this perfect meshing of character action games and FPS.
Turbo Overkill is closest to something like Doom 2016, but with better level design/set pieces and significantly worse audio design.
I think the latest Blood port is Blood: Fresh Supply which is the Nightdive one. But it's not as polished as their recent remasters and I'd use a sourceport over it still. NBlood is probably the best. Or GDX for a more GZDoom like experience.
