Oh man, I also forgot Cultic. I think I left it out as it's technically not done, it's just a part one. But it's like, if a modern Blood wasn't so nasty to the player. Fantastic game. Was supposed to get a console release but can't find it though.

Grabbed Dusk. Didn't want to regret not getting it whilst it was on sale.

Grabbed 5 mins on Dusk this morning and did the first wee level.
It feels very nice to play to be honest. Kind of love it already. Doesn't mess about either. By the end of the first level I'm dual wielding pistols and have a shotgun.

Glad you're liking it. My only real criticism of it is that it suffers a bit from the Early Access "making it in chronological order" thing as while the early levels are by no means bad, the developer clearly got way more adventurous and confident as development went on. Similar thing happens in Ultrakill - the early levels are a bit of joke compared to the insanity cooked up later on.

Yeah it's cool. Try and grab a bit more time on it later. It's very obvious early on that they have the "feel" of the combat right, and after playing the likes of Wrath etc, it's not a thing I can take for granted in a retro shooter.

Done about 7 levels in Dusk now. Bloody hell it's fun. They've absolutely nailed what actually makes these games work and why they can be so moreish. Levels are a good size, combat is satisfying, the drip of new weapons is perfect. It's just damn good. Thanks for the heads up chaps.

I picked up dusk too after all this hullabaloo about it. It's great fun isn't it! Super fast, blowing the shit out of things. Very nice.

It's very cool. Still think it looks just a tad too basic (which is weird to levy at something that is aiming to look exactly that), but it is great fun.

Yeah some of the textures are a bit, you know, but it's hard not to enjoy blasting shit at high speed. Reminds me of quake 1 online ffa's

The level design gets a huge step up in Episode 2 as well. Things get very weird.

I wish I had liked DUSK more, but I couldn't get on with the feel of the weapons, or how the enemies behaved. Level design gets better in later episodes, but those basic problems remain.
Which reminds me, I started Turbo Overkill just the other day, and the first thing i notice is that the starting weapons have very little impact (you want to make a good impression on me, give me a meaty-handling shotgun at least in the first 15 minutes) and movement is too fast and slidey. Hoping it's just a bad first impression though.

Finished Wrath last night. Overall enjoyed it, think it got stronger as it went on due to more enemy types and having more weapons - too often early on it feels like you don't have a good weapon for the mid-long range because of how limited the fangspitter's ammo is and end up popping away at stuff with the pistol.
I think the thing I ended up disliking most about it was the standard "shotgunner" style enemy type. They're actually pretty fucking annoying because although they're not hitscanners, once alerted they can fire instantly the moment you round corners and do quite a bit of aim punch. Rooms with a lot of them in are actually far more dangerous than any combination of the stronger enemies.

It's not very Doom like but I need to say I've started playing Echo Point Nova.
If you've ever wanted to know what Tribes crossed with Titanfall and a shitload of drugs looks like, boy do I have the game for you.

If it's not sacrillige in a Doom thread, Blue_Mike mentioned over in the other thread that Epic has allowed Unreal and Unreal Tournament to be released for free: fontgeek.io/post/611625/threadFirst one who starts arguing about Doom vs Unreal has to buy everyone a drink.

There’s no argument to be had. Unreal Tournament is the greatest arena shooter of all-time, by a country mile.

Quake's single player probably plays better than Unreal but I do think Unreal's SP is like a proto Half Life in many ways, with its unbroken progression. The weapon design lends itself better to multiplayer though. It's more even in MP, I think Quake is a better "competitive" game but I don't think you can beat Unreal for casual play. At least between UT and Q3, UT was just a bit more approachable and had way more maps and options too.
And the less said about Unreal 2 the better.

That’s like comparing Breaking Bad to Coronation Street.
Doom is Coronation Street in this analogy.

I wonder if UT's multiplayer still works and can find games? I don't remember how it was implemented.

Quake had the better single player, UT had the better multiplayer (both casually and professionally).
The AI on the bots in multiplayer is still fantastic 20+ years later.

It's from the days before matchmaking etc so I think in theory all you need is to be able to host a server yourself. Not sure about dedicated servers though.
