As per the poll, my favourite Soulsborne but I need a thread for occasional venting.
Like now: why am I struggling so badly in 4-2, The Ritual Path? I'm making a right meal out of it. Main room is fine, I've done Saint Urbain / Patches. It's just the tedious part getting past the damn skeletons on the ledges, while being shot at by Storm Beasts and then that annoying Reaper / Shadowlurker section. Half-minded to sack it and head to Upper Latria...
Actually, am going to the Underground Temple instead. I remember pretty much nothing about this bit.

I told myself I'd pay attention to World Tendency this time around but now I'm not sure I can be arsed. Is it worth it or just completionist busywork?

You want to wear the thief ring when going on the outside bits. You won't get shot at half as much. Don't worry about WT unless you specifically want something or are following a questline. Other than that, just do the usual (die at nexus any time you're human etc).

I've never played this and I've managed to snag a PS5 recently. I've played some of Bloodborne, found it difficult and never found a rhythm to it. Do you think I would get on with the remake?

It's ironic, because 4-2 is one of the best soul grinding spots.
I don't really recall having too much trouble here, as long as you can figure out where the summoners are and kill them quick. There are a couple of hidden drops/ledges, so watch out for that too!

Despite me spitting blood at times, I think it's more forgiving than most others, certainly Bloodborne, in various ways - the most obvious being a caster from early on = easy mode (well, easier mode). I think anyone with a PS5 should try it, funds allowing.

I found Demon Souls much easier than Bloodborne although others seem to have found Bloodborne far easier than I found it.

It's probably the best gateway into the series. Not too long and easier than the rest too. It was my first game, but alot of people play it later on and complain that it's too easy compared to the other games.

I'm just being very flakey tonight - a clear case where I should switch it off and come back to it tomorrow.

Thanks for the feedback guys, it is currently ridiculously expensive so I think I'll grab it when it's less of a pisstake price wise.

My boy has done DS1, DS2, DS3, Bloodborne, and just started Sekiro on his xbox (hence me suddenly having the urge to play it again myself on my PS) and... he fucking hates Demon's. So YMMV. Main reason is it's the most unforgiving in terms of bonfire placement. The levels are quite long and some of them have no shortcuts, meaning it's a big trek to the boss or where you died each time. That's not the only reason, but it's one of them. It's a brilliant game, but FROM definitely refined things with later games. So I'm not too sure how you'll fare. I still don't like the World Tendency, nor the encumbrance and the summoning seems borked unless they've fixed it since I last played so if you struggle on a boss you'll probably be alone til you beat it. The PS5 version is immense however.

You telling me your son has beaten all these Souls games was just a way of emasculating me, wasn't it Wunty?

What Wunty said, Thief ring, but also a knockback weapon if you can wield one. My first playthrough I just sent them sailing into the abyss

It's true. He's better than me. If he wasn't my son he'd be out the door.

I'd completely forgotten and was pretty shocked by this, as you do get used to much more favourable distances between bonfires in the later games

Danno It's not as well. Weirdly it's DS3. No matter what way you slice that, it's wrong in anybody's book. But he must take a bit after his mother after all. She hates Dark Souls 2 as well. To be fair she doesn't know what Dark Souls 2 is. I just get pitying looks if I mention it. I think she just feels sorry for me generally.

I think 4-1 and 4-2 are the only sizeable treks without any shortcuts. Some of the others, like the very first level, end up unlocking a very short path from bonfire to boss despite being quite sizeable levels.

I'd add 2-2 at least - yes, you can go down the pit shortcut but the actual level itself is a massive labyrinth and there's a hell of a trek back to your souls if you die on the way to the boss. I know - I lost about 15000 there this morning.

I did try the skip on 4-1 and couldn’t get it to work on the remake.

I presume you mean the battlement jump? It's hard but still doable. I had to strip off to do it (also a general mantra of mine)

I didn’t know this until a mate got caught on a NG+ glitch which warped him straight to the final boss instead of 1-1.

There's moments where I think it's brilliant but loads of other times I think it's just taking the piss with cuntish sections and awful bosses. 3-3 was particularly annoying.
I expect once I finally get through it I'll feel differently but compared to Bloodborne I don't get anywhere near the same rush from it. It does look lovely though.

The PS5 version is immense however. My last playthough of DS1 was some three years ago on PS4 when my lad was 8. I'd made him a cheat file on the X360 version, but he wanted to play it properly, and I wanted to finally do a no-summon run. He only bloody well did the same, including the DLC bosses. I've just had to factory reset my Pro for him, until them I had a clip of him hitting the last boss with a +10 Zweihander and taking him out in three/four parries. I was quite impressed I must admit.
