I did get my first invasion yesterday though. Was pretty funny as I smashed them in about three attacks.

Just started this again, determined to stick with it this time. Forgot how pretty it was. I'm going to try and cheese it through with a magic build, is Royalty a good choice? Also how do you use magic.

Royalty worked for me and I'm no Souls expert. stick a wand in your shield hand, so you can swap between spells and blocking stuff while still waving a sword about. Soul arrow is pretty good all the way through the game too.

I have the catalyst in my weapon (right) hand and the Kris blade in my left hand
Royalty is definitely a great class to start a magic build with

Having the catalyst in your weapon hand (as retro74 says) also gives you the advantage to block with the shield while striking; those bloody skeletons in 4-1 come to mind

Yeah Royalty is the magic choice, it's good as you get a high enough soul level to start levelling up in all areas. Remember not to spend all the specific named souls you get from bosses as thru can be exchanged for spells and used at the blacksmith for specific weapons. You can attempt any archstone you want but do the first 2 bosses in world one then try something else. If you want an excellent starting weapon near the beginning find the crescent falchion on world 4-1 as it's linked to your magic ability.

Yeah, if you're doing magic, definitely recommend the crescent falchion in 4-1. You'll have to navigate some twatty skeletons and also dodge a black skeleton that guards it, but you can dodge him and not even engage

After discovering souls late this year I’ve been on a binge, finishing DS:Remastered and Bloodborne, dropped out of DS2 before half way point, sprinkled with some 2D soulslikes like Salt and Sanctuary (great!), Blasphemous (good!) and Tooth and Tail (decent so far).
Nearly at the end of DeS (ps5) now, “only” need to beat maneater and whatever comes next after that, plus 1-4. I’ve liked the game well enough, but DS and BB captivated me more, the former probably for the novelty (for me) and level design, the latter for sheer atmosphere and a hugely satisfying combat system (love that hunters axe!). DeS is plenty pretty though- and some of the bosses were really cool. The gamey spoke design perhaps detracts a bit from the atmosphere. But it was nice having other places to go if stuck on a boss (hi maneaters).
Looking forward to DS3 after the slight disappointment of DS2. And then bring on Elden Ring!

Wow they weren't joking about magic being easy mode eh. It is quite a bit easier than most of the Souls games I have played, didn't use much magic myself just hid behind a spear and poked stuff with my spear by and large. Almost cheesing itself. As you mentioned its a gorgeous game, makes me wonder what other PS5 games are like but can't afford

I just finished a magic run the other night and it was easier than the run I had on the PS3 but then I do now had experience of a billion other souls games to fall back on. I also didnt spread my stats around like an idiot this time and ended up like 29 vit, 38 int and 50 mag with nothing in any other category.
The thing magic makes easier is that its free and easy range attacks so you dont have to dick around with the bow and arrow. You can farm the storm king stage insanely easily. You can get like 100k souls in 10-15 minutes. I also killed the azure dragon this time around thanks to magic so I didnt have to fanny around with it on the final boss run.

Think I'm going to rage quit, the endless slog to the armoured spider and then I can't move and get almost insta-killed. How the fuck did I finish this on PS3?

Dodge ranged attacks, get in its face and smash away. Learn to block the swing, learn to run away when he spews lava. Easy.

Also this is the one boss where you should be right in front of it, and not trying to hug its side/ass

Even better! You can do it! Thanks! Fucking hell, beat the bastard, used all my grass items, almost dead, regained human form and killed with only a drop of health (then died at the booby trap just ahead). 4-1 best now? I have Vit 12 Int 14 End 8 Str 9 Dex 12 Mag 25 Fth 12 Lck 7 Best to stick some in vitality now or get Magic to 30 first?

It also shouldn't be an endless slog, have you activated the wheel to the blacksmith? Nevermind

I'd say 20 Vit, 10 End, 30 Mag and then progress some more. *arrows inna face for the first reaper, run back to the archstone, repeat

Also you probably been to 3-1 already? Edit, sorry I see that weapon was already mentioned

Don’t put anything else into faith, just put everything into the build as per the post I made literally above your first one on this page.
4-1 is where you find the best magic sword and also the loop to it is a good farming run so you can get yourself a few levels there.

Thanks, no point putting much more into Int just now as I have 2 slots and only one spell (Soul arrow) or just equally upgrade vit, end and magic just now? What about gear, any decent armour or whatever I should go for?

No armour is better than your starting armour for royal, sadly (although armour doesnt really do much in this anyway)
You eventually get to buy spells that cost a lot of MP
You eventually will get a wand that halves your MP pool in return for being ridiculously powerful so keep piling into INT
Dont consume the boss souls as you eventually need to trade them for the above

Playing as Knight and I just got rid of my Flute armour in exchange for the Leather set that you can buy from the dude in the hidden cell in 4 1. Loads better for mobility and I can finally actually roll properly which in this game is helpful.

I tried to play this with a thief/dagger-only build and it was good initially but once I got to the second and third areas I soon got to the point where no matter what I tried I just seemed hopelessly underpowered. I’ve always found this same build viable in all the other Souls games but maybe it isn’t in Demons?
