Things with blue eyes = heads up Things with red eyes = nope, not yet Yeah aim to unlock shortcuts everywhere. The levels look complicated and large, and they kind of are, but once you get your head around them, it'll start to make more sense. One tip that should be in a bright neon fucking sign in the nexus is, "do not die in a world level in body form." You get body form by killing bosses mainly. When you kill a boss, go back to the nexus and kill yourself (yes really) by falling from a height. The reason for this is an obtuse thing called world tendency. If you die in a world in body form, it shifts the world to black tendency. Killing bosses shifts it to white. White is easier, black is harder. Certain things happen in both tendencies but for a new player, you need to learn the levels and the enemies first before attempting world tendency stuff. Dying in the nexus doesnt affect world tendency. I'd even recommend reading up on it on the wiki so you don't mess up Eesh that's for the heads up! Will take a look. Think I'm rusty, I flew through elden ring but this felt like playing Dark Souls for the first time.

Yeah there's a few things in this that can catch people out. It's the first souls game so it's all a bit early days with the mechanics and you need to get your head around it or you can gimp yourself.
However, the same can be said of exploits too. The remake has removed some glitches/cheese stuff, but there are ways to get to items for example that you shouldn't be able to get as quick as you can.

This thread inspired me to start a Temple Knight run; decided to only use the starting equipment (including miracles). Was really tough going at first, especially in World 2 as no magic weapon/spells made it a tough slog. But after lots of upgrading the halberd and the heater shield, I was able to tank Flamelurker and rinse Maneaters. Have now done all of worlds 2 and 3 and am predictably stuck on my 'favourite' level - 4-2.
It is a beautifully 'rough around the edges' game, especially when compared to what came afterwards, but so much fun and I still think 1-1 is the best opening level to any Souls game ever made.

Well, kind of PS3 version - I bought the digital copy but my PS3 died years ago. I am using an emulator. Not the best, especially considering my PC is not powerful enough, but it still runs well enough for me to enjoy it.
Unfortunately the remake didn't excite me enough to shell out for a PS5.

I've had to keep my ps3 just for demons souls!

Spoiler it, I am not above a good old fashioned cheesing. I'll come to it if I struggle! Is there a "optimum" level order? I kind of get the impression each area is roughly the same In terms of difficulty at least in the 1st part.

equip a bow, enter fog door, very slowly move forward and left, hugging the wall. There's a slight indentation in the wall where you can fire your bow without getting hit much. You might get the odd Web attack but that doesn't do much damage Generally the first levels in the worlds are the easiest but I'd say it slightly ramps up per world. So 1-1 being the easiest, then 2-1 a tad tougher etc. Though 5-1 generally is like a kick in the balls

As for optimum, I guess it depends on your build. If there's any magic going on with your character, then the crescent falchion from 4-1 is normally the place to go after 1-1, but probably only for the falchion itself mind.
Faith, you have to do some of 5-1 and 5-2, so that kinda works with 4-1 visit too, for the adjudicator shield and regen ring to counter world 5's poison
Etc etc

Right, I’ve got the blessed mace! Now I guess I’m stuck down here, looks like a dead end and I can’t get back up. This level is proper cheap on souls though. Got to this point with only 400. So suicide isn’t a problem.
Then I guess next would be 2-1 to get the blacksmith.

I’m thinking 2-1, 4-1 then 5-1 for me. Buggered if I can remember my way through 2-1 though.

Yeah I ended up moving on from the mace. Can't remember direction but it doesn't matter as I fell to my death anyway The levels will come back to you

Ok I guess there must be a ladder I’m not seeing. I thought it was strange. There are not usually dead ends in from games, the levels are so well designed.
I might head back to the nexus for now. I’m out of arrows anyway.

For souls early on, it's gotta be a bow in 4 2 on that first reaper and then evacuate
To get 10k for evacuate, I'd just use the mace in 4 1 on the skellys all the way up to and including the main gate then just go back to archstone.
I noticed that in the remake when you go back to the archstone, you can just select 4 1 again instead of having to go back to the nexus first, so it saves even more time. Not that it loads slow on a ps5 but it all helps

I think I could do 4-1, but I always struggle with the boss. I’ll dip into 2-1 I think to unlock the blacksmith. Maybe cheese the boss. Thinking about it, it’s actually 2-2 I think I’ll struggle to navigate not 2-1. Less said about world 3 the better

I took the adjudicator out this time with just a bow from up top. Didn't get hit. Yeah, 2-2 is the sprawling nightmare one Watch that hole in 3-1

Yeah do lots of collecting and upgrading before bosses imo. The x-1 worlds have loads of useful things that just make runs easier
I’m doing remake NG+ with my first PS5 character now and I’ll say one thing, you really need a stock of grass. On the NG run I just completed I don’t really use grass at all, maybe a couple but not may at all
On NG+ I’m munching through the stronger grass all the time. Even the low level mobs empty the HP bar from just one or two hits
In NG+ I find that it’s a good strategy to keep swapping rings around mid level depending on situations. Swap to thief ring for lizard, back to regen ring for the next bit, swap to avarice ring for some souls from reaper etc, really helps to make progress

retro74 are you using second chance in ng+? Nah, although I get hit a bunch I never actually die so it’s a waste of slots. It’s mostly magic this character, which I never usually use I’m pure melee on FROM games Have soul ray, warding for bosses, evacuate, cure and ignite set us as my magic and miracles

I found the way forward, you need to kick a bridge down. Got attacked by rats and plagued before being killed by one of the big fuckers.
Unlocked the shortcut in 2-1 and the blacksmith. Not sure whether to finish it off or move on to 4-1 before going back to 5-1.

Good work RobEG yeah there’s a bridge exactly like that one at the start of the level, sort of a tutorial so you don’t get stuck later!

Right that is 4-2 and 4-3 done. Also did the pure white and pure black events in that world. Forgot that the two bosses give you a shed load of souls. Levelled up like crazy and now the skellies barely tickle.
Just 5-2, 5-3, 1-3 and 1-4 left but not before I pure black Latria.....

Armour spider successfully defeated (cheesed).
I might take out the dragon in 1-2 before taking on 4-1.
I’m trying to remember what the best upgrade paths are. My build is STR/FRH so I have the blessed mace and know I need W5 for that.. But for my bow I was thinking I just use the standard upgrade path. I was tempted by quality but I don’t think I’ll be putting many more points into DEX. I can’t even remember what sticky does!

If you've done the spider boss, there's loads od sticky shards around there. They give a bow a big dex bonus iirc.
I've just upgraded mine normally so to speak and then I turned it into the lava bow as I can't be arsed shard hunting

Rob that's the same build as me I think. I just upped str and dex to requirement levels and took faith to 20 and then just chuck the rest into vitality, endurance and faith on a rota
