What did he say to you, has he given you something to do? I have to admit I just kill him in Latria after releasing him, so not sure how the Nexus stuff develops.

I've done the Ivory Tower, not sure if I missed something as it was a winding staircase up to a room in which a fought a phantom and said it was the boss old monk?
Collected the gold demon soul and gone back to the Nexus.

Found the Old Monk a very underwhelming fight. It is supposed to be a battle with a player controlled enemy. Not sure if they have the same load out out or if they use their own. Against the AI it is incredibly easy and really disappointing after such a fantastic area.
Perhaps when you have an actual player controlling the phantom it is good, even then I expect it is really hit and miss as to how great an encounter it is. Certainly my least favourite boss battle during my offline play through (armoured spider would be a close second). Dark Souls 3 did a similar battle in its DLC and I recall it being better, although still not great.

Started the remake as a Royal (a.k.a. easy mode) and just beat Phalanx, got more than 8000 souls burning my pocket; can a good soul here remind me what should I spend them on? First thing after I level-up will be 4-1 and the crescent falchion - I did say easy mode  |

If you're going to exploit the Royalty class, I'd probably pump up magic and intelligence first. Soul Arrow is really useful for quite a bit.

First thing after I level-up will be 4-1 and the crescent falchion - I did say easy mode the good thing about Royal is you're at SL1 so you can do anything you like. My go to was royalty - Crescent Falchion - level HP and either Dex, Mag or Str depending on my planned build - kill Armour Spider then use the skip to kill Big Bird and get a bow and start farming the reaper in 4-2 If you want a str build, the soul from big bird in 4-1 makes the best str weapon in the game |

Returned to this after a week off, killed the leechmonger boss in the shithole place I'm in now with to many ledges!!!!!
Returned to the Nexus and spoke with Yert? The twat attacked me after a little dialogue and put the shits up me! He's dead now, collected his armour and mentioned that someone was right about me!
Back to the swamp I go!
Onwards!(downwards)

Yeah, I'm splitting my souls between vitality, endurance, magic and intelligence so far.

Yeah, that's a good spread of skills, especially if you're using the crescent falchion. Got a bow? I just cheese the spider by hugging the wall on the left. There's a little area where you can ping away and don't get hit. Much. |

I've been trying to take down 4 of those huddled together around 3 items that I was desperate to collect. Many deaths, arrows and time later it's 3 stones of the Ephemeral eyes! FFS!! 😁

They really are. I don't remember having such trouble with them on the original. I'll probably chuck on the thief ring and sneak round the edge, then use big spells on the ones I can't avoid
