Just did The Vault for the first time. What a great dungeon, looks spectacular and big Dark Souls vibes. The final boss is basically Ornstein. Shame about blue haired elf dude though.

Are you all still stuck queueing?
Just rolled credits on Heavensward. It was pretty good. Then realised I'd missed the Binding Coils of Bahamut raid so am now using party finder to recruit lvl 90 companions to carry me through it unsynced. One guy literally one-shotted the first raid boss. Dude even kited me around the level to make sure I got the full exploration achievement. Started the HW patch quests and it's good to see some old faces returning.

I only play once a week, with tonight being the night. We did manage to get in last Sunday, but had to start logging in about 4 hours before we were due to play.
We're about half way through Stormblood.

Just started Stormblood. The post-Heavensward patch quests were brilliant. Great story, writing, characters, big moments... wonderful stuff and the best Final Fantasy I've played since VII. Absolutely loving it!

I'm finding Stormblood a bit of a slog, too many story similarities between characters and too many leaps of logic.
I thought Heavensward was better storytelling with a better rounded cast.
Almost at the end, though still have the patch quests to get through before Shadowbringers.

The patch content for SB, though, is pretty damn good. 4.4, especially - might be my favourite story patch outside of expansions.

Getting into tanking a bit more now with my Dark Knight. Much prefer his circular area attack over Warrior's cone shaped one for aggroing mobs, and I just like the aesthetic of the giant two handed sword more (though have yet to find an armor set I really like). Also, the DRK story is something a bit different.
One realisation I've recently made that has helped me to enjoy the game more and feel less pressure is that since I'm not planning on doing any savage or ultimate content I really don't need to maximise my damage output and so can happily leave out the odd ability or two from my rotation. For example, with Red Mage I'm now not bothering with the verfire ready stuff that I kept fucking up before, but still feel like I'm doing a decent job with this role.
Am at around 300 hours now so this must be approaching my most played game ever.

How is Endwalker? I'm going to play it but not for a couple months at the very least (work,40k, work, 40k, Elden Ring, work)

I'm not there yet, still in the early stages of Stormblood. Judging by the FFXIV reddit page though, Endwalker has been very well received.

Blog update! I've just transferred over to Sophia on the Oceania server, and my connection is now "Excellent" rather than "Poor". Been hearing a lot about the importance of ping, let's see if I notice any difference. At least there are some other English speakers to play with now.
About a third of the way into Stormblood, took a couple of weeks off from the MSQ to level up some alt jobs and dip into the Alexander raids. Am now switching between DRK, RDM and SMN and am enjoying how all three play. So far Stormblood is alright, though probably not as good as Heavensward. The antagonists I've encountered up to this point (the viceroy woman and the dude with the big spiky hammer) are cartoonish and boring, and the story (Liberate Ala Mhigo! Oh, and Doma too!) is lacking the intrigue of HW. On the plus side, the level design continues to impress, particularly in the dungeons, and the underwater stuff is pretty cool. I've got the hang of glamour plates too, so am FINALLY happy with how my character looks.

Blog updaaaate!
Had a great time last night running Coils of Bahamut Turn 1 synced with a party of randoms. We must have attempted the Caduceus boss fight about 25 times. Thing is, we never even managed to do it in the end, but it was a super fun experience nonetheless. One or two players were vets and knew all the mechanics, and were just incredibly patient in explaining what to do to us sprouts. And as I now have a little wireless keyboard hooked up to my PS5 I was able to communicate properly with everyone.
TLDR: just had my first proper MMO raiding experience and I loved it!
Also, started levelling up a WHM, and healing with a controller is actually not that difficult if you set up your targeting options right. Oh, and the Stormblood plot is improving, and I joined a free company.

Stormblood done. Hien turning up at the battle for Ala Mhigo was completely expected, but it still gave me goosebumps. Just finished the Alexander raids too, which were great fun.

How friendly is this game to level and play through the story with others?
I had been playing SWTOR with a friend but we're at the point now where nearly every story mission is in a personal singer player instance, so it just feels like we're playing concurrent solo games for 70% of the time.
Reading about FFXIV it sounds like a fair bit of the leveling and story is focused on the individual, and has individual instances fairly often, so I'm not really sure if this would be much better for us.

It can be a tiny bit fiddly in getting cutscenes out of the way iirc, but overall it's fantastic to play through it co-op. Plenty of group content as part of the story

When I played SWTOR I actually thought it was one of the few MMOs that handled playing with friends really well. Especially when it came to decisions in the story where you could pick different outcomes, and the system would randomly pick someone's choice to go with, much to my friend's chagrin.
Has that changed since it went F2P?
In terms of ff14, you're right, there are loads of personal instances, which are essentially single player story content, and yes it's very frustrating to have to leave the party to carry on the story (particularly because they'll still trigger the the cutscene, which will then fail to start the instance because you're still grouped š¤¦āāļø)
You do get regular dungeon instances and raids, especially if one if you is a healer, they will be your easy ticket into anything, and there is alot to be said for playing through a huge game like ff14 with a friend.
We've had lots of fun, and we've ended up doing a lot more social stuff than we would have playing alnoe. It's also been great as a regular way to keep in touch, as well as making the various lockdown relatively easy.
Tbh I don't actually think the story is that amazing, sure it has its moments, but its not something that really rivets me if I were playing alone.
Having a regular party has pushed me on through the dull bits, so I can enjoy the rest. I would have probably stopped playing by now if I had done it on my own.

ZuluheroIn SWTOR, from the Shadow of Revan expansion (released about 7 years ago) onwards all the story phases are personal, meaning that people can't enter the same instance. Or rather, you enter as an observer but won't be able to join in with the conversations. So no more having conflicting choices. Which sucks. And the observer won't get any credit towards the quest completion. It's kind what would happen if two people with the same class tried to level and entered the same class story phases. Only there's no other storylines. The justification was that it means people don't "accidentally" get saved to a story choice that didn't want. My feeling is that if the story is that important those folks should just not group up, and let those who are happy to see choices decided by a dice roll crack on with it. As far as FFXIV goes I've got little interest in the end game or grouping with people other than my friend, we just play a few hours together each week. If much of that ends up being solo stuff it is less appealing. I've got some reservations about FFXIV, in that the aesthetic bugs me, and was hoping playing it co-op would drag me past that so I could at least make a more informed opinion.

Ahh that's interesting, changed quite a bit then, shame, as choice picking was really fun.
In FF, the story forces you into group instances quite regularly, so you'll have to play those whether you want to or not.
If one of you is not a healer (or tank to a lesser degree) you'll be in for some long wait times.
We only play a few hours a week (Sunday evening) and have felt like we've achieved loads in that time. When we're forced to solo, we just do the content simultaneously so we get all the reveals at the same time and can chat over mic. Plus keeping our playtime spread out has never left us feeling burnt out with it, and gives us plenty of time to do other stuff.

Weirdest time in game tonight. Someone in Gridania was advertising a player run night club in the player housing district, intrigued, my friend and I donned our fancy glamour and headed there.
We found a massive RP club, with receptionists, bouncers, bartenders, vip areas etc. Got told off a few times for having our minions out, posting emotes to chat and going into areas we weren't allowed (but in a very friendly way)
There was a DJ on stage. When we first entered the 'club' the reception had told us to go to some twitch stream where people were live streaming the club whist DJing music to listen to.
Club was full of people dancing, buying drinks, chatting etc. Twitch stream had about 130 people in it by the time we left, so can only assume that was the same amount as in the club, definitely seemed like that many people were in there.
It was quite an eye opener. I had no idea stuff like this happened - we once got invited to a wedding, but that seemed like it was run by the game - this was totally run by players, very organised, completely bizarre but really added another element to the world.

Iām really early on - still donāt ARR stuff and apparently off to prepare to fight titan. Guess itās going to be a matter of clicking on everything and see what it does.

I've put this on hold for a few months while I play other games. At the end of Stormblood MSQ and hoping I can pick it back up to continue into Shadowbringers. Hopefully 400 hours of muscle memory sticks.

Ok getting back into this now and determined to push through the MSQ to the end of Endwalker. Currently going through the Stormblood patch quests. The writing is still pretty good but one thing is starting to irk me. Four different characters have now been killed only to reappear and be alive after all. Four! I really hope they don't keep doing this as it's lazy and just generally lowers the stakes.

Yeah, personally didn't like SBlood as much as HWard, also thought other story elements were a bit lazy too.
I did like the Eastern aesthetic though.

I'm in a similar position, finished stormblood and done just a few quests of shadowbringers.
I think I will go back to previous trials and raids though as I have not finished alexander, omega and still have the last 2 bits of bahamut to do.
Such a vast game, so easy to get side tracked.

Finished Shadowbringers! Characters are still coming back from the dead, but oh my that was a brilliant expansion (Il Mheg aside - I just really can't stand fairies). Wonderful character-centric storytelling, and with a truly great antagonist in Emet-Selch, who I hope also comes back from the dead as he's way more interesting than Zenos. On to Endwalker!
