Yeah the music was shit hot throughout the whole expansion, and it was funny to finally understand what that Lahee meme was about.

I really don't enjoy the wailing in the forest during the daytime. I actively avoided going there unless it was night or I could be bothered to put my own tunes on. Other than though, yes.

Finished the Ivalice raid series (loved the Lighthouse one) and working my way through the SB patch quests. Dipped into Eureka and Bozja, and they both seem horribly grindy... Am I right in thinking there's no point going after their relic weapons at this point, as I'll be getting a better weapon as soon as I start EW?

565 hours in and I've finally graduated from sprout status. Pretty sure that's the longest tutorial I've ever played.

Was pretty bummed when I lost my Sprout icon. Now there's no more excusing my shit play.

Just finished the Nier Automata raids. As a massive fan of that game they were a real treat to play through, great to see 2B and 9S again and to hear that music... especially the Weight of the World/FF theme mash up.

Finally actually giving this a go. Basically leveling with a friend, means we have to keep ungrouping to complete instances and dungeons but setting up a linkshell means it doesn't really matter.
I like being able to just use bots for dungeons to save queuing but do find it weird it's either all bots or all players, would have been nice to run through those with my friend.
It's okay, to be fair. I still find the promotional material slightly off-putting but in game it's far less, well, weaboo-ish.
About level 30 on a few jobs now. Just focusing on Lancer, Thaumaturge and Marauder mostly. Story so far is slowly getting somewhere but not much has really happened yet.
So it's fine. I'll probably end up getting it to see the expansion stuff, but unsure if it'll keep me playing once the story stuff is done.
It's the Final Fantasy game I've most enjoyed since FFX, but that's a low bar tbh. But yeah, enjoyable and fairly relaxed.

Still playing this. Finished the base game and are working through the first expansion stuff now, cleared the second wing of the crystal tower raid.
Mostly just playing with a friend once week, but not really felt inclined to play more than that. Most of my enjoyment comes from making snarky comments to my friend about Alphi, the precocious twat.
It's perfectly fine, but can't say I've been hugely blown away either. I'll probably get a sub or whatever I need once I reach the end of the generous free trial, but can't see myself really bothering with the end game stuff once I've cleared the story.

Tbh glams and player run nightclubs are the real endgame.

Still chipping away at this, just starting the Heavensward story in earnest I think. I do like the story and characters, but I'm finding that the rotations starting to feel a bit bloated for my tastes. I'm get the feeling much of the FFXIV community would disagree but it's my personal preference. Might try making some rotation macros.
Perhaps related to that, but I'm not really sure I enjoy the duties that much generally. There have been a few of the larger ones - the crystal tower raids and a few of the hardmodes - where I just had no clear idea what was happening, just seems to be a lot of visual and audio clutter.
The whole scaling down to dungeons and losing abilities is still really throwing me off too.
So yeah, still want to complete the story line, but still don't think I'll bother sticking around at end game, and doubt I'll level many classes not currently on my pad (Dragoon and Red Mage now. Did try Black Mage but found the rotation too unforgiving of mistakes, and because I'm shit in duties I make lots of mistakes).

The raids and dungeons keep increasing in quality and design as you progress through the expansions. Red Mage was the job I settled on towards the late game. I think it has the fewest actions and a pretty simple rotation (you can even ignore the "verfire ready" stuff unless you're doing the really high end content). And leaping into the fray, Zorro-ing the enemy and backflipping out never gets old.

Both the classes I'm playing seem fully capable of jumping backwards off cliffs if not careful.
I really do need to sort out my keybinds though. If I can just stand there and turret it's fine, but as soon as moving is introduced I sometimes just can't reach keys very comfortably, and if I need to use and modifiers like alt or ctrl it takes me a moment to reorientate my fingers. The curse of small hands.
Currently use 1-6, A,D,R,F,Z,X,C,V. Even 6 is hard to press if I need to strafe left. Also have 3 mouse buttons bound. And even then there are some classes where I'm running out of easily reachable keys, especially when stuff like the non-class abilities come up, like sprint.
Pretty sure it's a *me* thing because most others seem fine with it, but yeah, I'd prefer fewer abilities.
I might actually try a controller at this point, might actually be easier for me.

Controller support is very good in this game and that's my main way of playing.

Seems like a useful guide thanks.
Though I've also found a plug-in that moves combos to one button that I'm very much considering. I know it's against the TOS but afaik they can't really detect client side stuff. So...

Re-subbed so I could play the expansions after finishing ARR a couple of years ago. Whilst trying to decide whether to continue as a bard or white mage, I did a dungeon run npcs and was really surprised at how well it worked. A great way of getting some practice in, but also to just skipping the mmo aspect all together.

The voice acting change from ARR to Heavensward is mostly an improvement - I particularly like how Ala Mhigo is apparently Yorkshire.
But there is one exception and that's Merlwyb, whose original voice is *substantially* better.
(Just saw it commented about on the first page. Bit late I know)

I'm going to confuse everyone by bumping this thread up to near the FFXVI one.
Just picked this up from the Steam sale. Probably won't jump straight in whilst I'm still in the grip of Diablo 4, but wondering if there are any particular tips that a complete noob of these sort of games should know before starting? I know so little that I only just realised that I was going to have to pay a sub after 30-days (I assume that is 30-days after registering and not from now).

It's 30 days free, then sub, yeah. If you've already made the account, it's too late to do this, but there is a free trial that gives you the base game and first expansion for free, and I think you'd be able to then apply your Steam version on top to unlokc full game. There's a bunch of restrictions like amount of gil, not being able to interact with the market boards - support.eu.square-enix.com/rule.php?id=5383&la=2&tag=freetrial - but nothing too onerous. In terms of ingame tips. I guess follow the Main Scenario Quests (the icon looks like a golden burning meteor). There's been serious improvements to the base game (being able to run dungeons with NPCs, reworked several key story instances) but it can still feel like an old design. Doesn't really matter which class you start as. If you're not jiving with it after you reach MSQ level 10, you can unlock a new on and just try that instead. I'm sure other would have plenty of other tips, so I'll leave it at that for now. It is a frankly enormous game.

Does the free trial let you play the base game and first expansion without any time limit? The restrictions don't seem too bad, so if I can play that much for free without any need to rush I should probably just get a refund on my Steam version and use the £18 for something else in the sale. Not even sure if I'm going to like the game, as I've bounced off the few MMOs I've played.

The free trial is incredible value, and did I hear they were adding another expansion to it or am I imagining that?

The free trial is pretty generous. There is a Gil cap that you reach well before the trial runs out, which is when I subbed, but in terms of the other restrictions - market boards etc- I haven't really bothered with those since subbing as it's not really needed imo. Depending where your interests lie.

Free trial is really generous but there are quite a few restrictions with friends, partying and whispering people etc.
I've been subbed for nearly 3 years 😮

Not sure when I'll actually get around to trying it though.

Surprisingly, as I had no idea this was anywhere near releasing, I’m currently downloading an open beta for this on Xbox.
Haven’t played a proper old skool style MMo in years, so quite up for this.

Yeah, Xbox is late to the party, but should look pretty good with all the graphical bells and whistles running at 60.
I'm still going strong, just the last EW patch quests and I'm done with the main scenario quests. Only took 3 and a half years! 😅
Guess I'll just mooch around till Dawntrail. Really can't wait to see an expansion at launch at the same time as everyone else.

This is pleasingly old skool in so many ways. Most impressively in how many people are actually playing it. I haven’t seen this many players in an MMO city since the old days of Stormwind. It’s kinda cool.
