You can also pick up a short side quest from Walter after you've done his part of the main quest that will net you a ship of varying capabilites. I ended up with a hideous carbuncle of a ship that has excellent stats. Ah crap I missed this- I guess I’m locked out of that unless I re-do the main quest at the start of a NG… (Nevermind, I can build my own amazing ship now )

Yeah I built my own rather than do that quest and I was very happy with it. Then I flew it a couple of times before completing the main quest and uninstalling the game I was a UC gal in my game, Freestar never appealed cos cowboy companion didn't laugh at my jokes so I left him at the lodge

How do you "build your own" though?
Do I need sell or destroy the Frontier first to free up a ship slot, then build one from scratch?
Based on what a friend told me, it was my understanding that I need to acquire a second ship and sell it to free up a ship slot, then I can build a ship from scratch.
I'd consult a guide, but I imagine it'd get very spoilerific very quickly.

Easiest way to acquire a new ship is to wait until one lands near you while you're exploring, book it over there and fly off with it. Saves messing about with targeting and disabling the engines.

Yeah it’s odd that there’s no “build from scratch” option but you do need to have a ship already. Deleting everything so there’s nothing left is pretty satisfying though

Not that anyone cares anymore, but as I've just discovered this, I thought I'd share. As well as the unlimited storage box next to research station, the three ammo cases behind the weapon bench are also bottomless. Handy if you want to separate your drugs from your food or whatever. Edit: DO NOT DO THIS - stuff despawns Update: Rock Piles also have unlimited capacity. The ones that spawn around points of interest when you’re surveying. I set up an outpost near one - it’s not close enough to use the stored resources crafting the outpost, but still a nice infinite box nearby. Edit: DO NOT DO THIS - stuff despawns

Definitely agree with that neilch - I’m on NG++ and after doing my usual stealth and carry weight boosts, I ploughed everything into the perks that let you build better stuff- weapons, gear, ships. Then went to the better buy and sell perk, and the first scavenger perk, for more credits quicker- really helpful at the start of NG+. Haven’t put a single point into combat, no regrets. Isn't that just playing the same shit over and over again? And again? Godspeed dude! I couldn't get through it once, but it you like it, I'm all onboard!

deebs I wouldn’t be doing it if it felt like replaying the same quests again and again- there’s quite a few reasons it doesn’t. 1) There’s a way of skipping the main quest as soon as you start NG+, that still allows you to do the ending quite quickly and get to NG++ 2) I’m doing quests I didn’t do first time around 3) For quests you do repeat, there are often different dialogue options you only get after completing the game once. In one case I basically skipped a whole persuasion dialogue by saying “look, I already know this is what you really want, so just let me have my way and you can have it”

Had a great time playing yesterday, now I've finally realised the game is all about the ship combat and the Tech skills tree, rather than crafting gear.
Locking onto a ship, targeting and disabling their engines, boarding, having a zero-G gunfight, then looting their contraband before blowing up the ship is definitely my top gaming moment of the year so far.
The way all the objects in the ship are kicked up by gunfire, leaving a floating mess of bodies and clutter is just brilliant.
I was also most amused that ballistics weapons cause you to fly backwards in zero-G. Must find a good laser rifle.

It’s weird, I’m approaching 200 hours played and I’ve only been in zero-G once. I assumed it was scripted to only happen in particular places that have been designed for it, I didn’t even realise it could happen in random ship encounters.
Edit- unless you mean you’re doing the zero-G yourself with a power?

That's a bit disappointing to hear. I'm still very early in the game, and it was part of a side mission about ridding a system of Spacers, not a random encounter.
I assumed it was zero-G because I'd destroyed a few of the ship's systems... As soon as I sat in the ship's pilot seat the gravity returned.

I looked it up and there’s 3 or 4 specific places that have zero-G, so not a thing that can happen in random encounters unfortunately. It seems odd that they added it, even let you spend perks on improved zero-G abilities, when it’s that under-used.
Held back for future DLC maybe?

How disappointing. There were at least 10 enemy ships in the side mission I was doing, and I just happened to decide to board this particular one for a laugh (because I took out it's engines) and it happened to be zero-G.
I assumed it must've been because I disabled the "artificial gravity" during my attack, but I guess not.
It's a well established sci-fi trope for a disabled or defunct ship to have zero-G. I'm surprised Bethesda didn't lean into it.
Edit: I've just done some googling myself and some people on Reddit suggest that getting a critical hit on the reactor will always cause a ship to be zero-G inside, which makes sense.
It could just be random though. I'm going to experiment later on... I'm accidentally reading too many spoilers googling information.

Yesterday I learnt that I've been flying ships all wrong.
Level 1 Piloting - You can now use thrusters.
Space combat is a bit different now.

Hang on so thrusters…is that the ‘boost’ done by clicking the stick in? I’m sure it let me do that before taking the skill.

You can top out the missile rating at 195 on the Star Eagle without any points in starship design.
Attach one of the missiles to a duplicatable piece of cowling or whatever and it will duplicate along with the cowling.

I'd fucked off the current mission to find the 'warlock' because my fat ass ship is a bit slothy. I went away doing other stuff to purchase something new before realising I couldn't actually pilot the dam thing Just noticed that the piloting perk is where I rank up to use class b or c.

I guess I can post in here now that I'm actually playing - I had a mental experience boarding a huge damaged (GalBank?)ship where the grav would cut out along with power surges, so you'd be safely nestled in cover and then whuuumm everybody floating in emergency lighting, only to crash back down when the power all kicked back in. Certainly seemed a random encounter than tied to a quest, but was a fun experience.

I picked piloting as a starter perk thankfully. Didn't realise something as basic as boosting was locked behind it (how the fuck is ship combat possible without it?!)

Correcting myself on the zero-g thing - it can happen when you board a ship you’ve disabled too. So not just 3 or 4 places, but only 3 or 4 places where it’s scripted / explained by something happening there.
