Are American biscuits scones?
I think so, pretty much - fruit-free, buttermilk scones.
That's a bigger crime than whether jam or clotted cream goes first.

Biscuits aren’t scones. No eggs used and they’re not as sweet.

Don't get me started on what they call gravy! Looks nice, but it's just not gravy...

You almost certainly know more than I!
Per Wikipedia:
So not quite, but at the same time, kind of?

The UK can’t even internally settle on what a bread roll is called, I’m not sure there’s the high ground for what other countries name things here.

I'm picturing you all wearing either labcoats or dressed for afternoon tea rees-moggian like (not sure which is stranger in my curr(a)ntly Covid-addled mind) with little ramekins of clotted cream and jam, deliberating on precise application and distribution techniques.
My question, perhaps showing my total lack of social skills and class, would be: is it a terrible crime to use the same implement, be it spoon or knife, when loading up the scone with toppings directly from the jar/pot/tub? If one is careful enough to wipe said implement on the scone between toppings and leave only imperceptible traces of foreign bodies in the jar/pit/tub is that acceptable?
Either way, not bothered, I'll take pride in my hedonism.

Not to derail the Official Scone Thread, but snackplissken mentioned Marmite, and I gotta ask: has anyone tried this
?
I keep seeing it in the supermarket, and now it kind of haunts my dreams.

Entering the "Is it a biscuit or cake?" debate will probably sink the UK.

I would happily dunk my toast in that (maybe after 10am, mind)

Fuck yes, it is!
And don't try to claim innocence by "careful[ly]... wip[ing] said implement on the scone", 'cause all that does is introduce crumbs into the mix.
Crumbs in the jam? Crumbs in the clotted cream?
I've fired butlers for less.

I am off the drink or I would go for that. Bet you it's amazing. I quite liked the Camden stuff as well.
Buy it and drink it for me. Go on.

@wuntyate I reckon DJCopa's your man for that - I don't like beer, and I absolutely detest Marmite! Care to take one for the team, DJ?

Funilly enough I was just having a moan about marmite flavoured food always being a massive disappointment (unless you count twiglets of course) We've tried all sorts... Most recent was marmite flavoured hummus, which was just bad hummus with a bit of marmite mixed in.
I'll still probably try that stuff if I see it on our next shop!

I'm not a fan of marmite so I'm not 100% familiar with its texture but it seems like its the sort of thing you could mix into your own hummus

Yeah, absolutely. Same with the peanut butter and marmite pre-mixed jars. (which was also rubbish)
It's just one of those things you see on a supermarket shelf and think with your stomach.

You can say "biscuits and gravy" in some kind of Southern US accent as much as you like but I'll just picture digestives and Bisto.

That Marmite beer seems to be available in most of the major supermarkets here in the UK, so I guess it has found an audience of some sort.
Maybe it's the British equivalent of Baconnaise.

I want to now. I've been eating marmite cashews today and they are lovely.

Isn't Marmite a by product of brewing? Nicely cyclical if so. Definitely up to try it. Might go well with some cashews or pork scratchings.

Yeah me too, sometimes I replace the scone with bread and the jam with cheese and pickle.

barchetta not sure about Marmite, but yeah, yeast extract in general is a by product of some brewing processes. Guinness did their own spreadable stuff at one point. Would be a shame if they're paying Marmite a fortune when they could be using their own stuff mind you.

Sorry but Marmite peanut butter is great. But I generally agree that most of the Marmite spin offs are disappointing.
